“Logan, it’s Laura,” she said, and he could hear the tension in her voice. “Are you still in New York?”

“Yes, I said I’d be here for a week,” he reminded her. “For my grandmother’s funeral.”

“Yes, yes, that’s right.”

“What’s going on?” he asked, wanting to get right to the heart of her concern. It wasn’t like her to call him out of the blue like this.

Especially since he knew she hadn’t forgotten about the funeral.

“Listen, it might be nothing, Logan, but I had a call from Doug earlier.” Laura was referring to another board member, one of their newest.

Logan didn’t like the man, but it wasn’t a social club. The board was made up of highly experienced professionals, and they’d thought having someone younger might be a good balance and bring fresh ideas.

“Go on,” he said.

“He wanted to know if I’d received the board papers for this weekend’s meeting. Started throwing around numbers and a few concerns.”

Logan’s brows lifted.

Concerns?

“Okay. Well, it’s our job, as board members, to ask questions, but Doug should be raising them during the meeting, not having private conversations,” Logan replied.

To do anything else screamed of an ulterior motive, and they both knew it.

What the fuck was the guy up to?

“Yes. Which was my response. But I suspect he’s ringing the others to do the same thing,” Laura said. “I wasn’t going to call, but Logan, I think you should keep an eye on him.”

Was she saying this was the start of a coup?

Based on what?

Doug didn’t have the balls, or any credibility.

Did he?

Logan suddenly wondered if he’d taken his eye off the ball—not his balls—and missed something.

“Did he say anything in particular that led you to believe this?”

“Just a few fly away comments about your ability to keep running the company. You know, after...” Laura trailed off.

After Zoe.

Doug hadn’t been on the board when that happened—it was four years ago, and Doug joined them only two years ago—but it was no secret, and he would have done his homework before joining.

“It’s okay, Laura. I get it. That’s all behind us now, and the board knows it,” Logan said, a little too angrily.

Shit.

“We do. I don’t know why he brought it up,” she replied. “Look, I don’t want to talk out of place, but I thought you should know.”

Logan was glad she had.

“You did the right thing. Let’s keep this between us. I have a feeling Doug has an ulterior motive here. Let’s keep an eye on him. Ring me if you hear anything else.” Logan ended the call and went back to the others.

Planting his ass against the back of the sofa and crossing his arms, Logan considered another whisky, but what he really needed was sleep.
