Jesus.

Saying no was very unlikely at this point, except there were things she had to consider.

Logan was Harper’s cousin-in-law. Emma lived in Chicago and Logan in Philadelphia, so it wasn’t as if they’d bump into each other at Dufort family events.

She and Harper were becoming closer now the kiwi author lived in the United States, but not invite-to-family-weddings close.

So, it was likely she’d never see him again after tonight. A one-night stand was possible.

However, they’d need to be discrete.

Logan Dufort was the CEO of the largest liquor manufacturer and distributor in the country—Dufort Liquor. He had enough of a public profile that his personal life was of interest to the media.

Emma only knew this because she had been researching billionaires for ideas about a new book she was plotting. Since his divorce, he hadn’t been linked to a serious relationship, but there was a lot of speculation and talk about him being more of a playboy now he was single.

She was unsurprised. His cousins were infamous in NYC for their previous lifestyles. Now they were coupled up and Daniel married.

Emma, on the other hand, wasn’t as well known. Not famous. She had sold millions of copies of her books over the years, but while her readers knew her face, most Americans wouldn’t.

That didn’t mean if they were seen together, a journalist wouldn’t be able to quickly figure out who she was. Being with Logan Dufort would put the spotlight on her.

Neither of them would want that.

A businessman and an erotic romance author. Logan wasn’t her type, and Emma doubted she was his. Except for one gloriously passionate night.

Emma lifted her glass to hide her faint scowl. It was the bane of her damn life, having people judge how she made a living.

No one more than her mother.

When Emma had resigned from her corporate life and picked up a career as an author, the woman who birthed her had quite a lot to say about it.

Emma placed the glass down more firmly than she’d meant to and blinked.Shit.She glanced up and noticed Logan’s head tilted, him watching her.

An observant man. Good to know. Attention to detail was always a good thing when dealing with orgasms.

She brushed off her sudden mood shift because who cared what her fucking mother thought.

Spoiler alert: I do.

It was hard not to. The woman was someone many people admired and celebrated. She was a doctor, after all. Dr. Edwards—renowned and celebrated pediatric surgeon. Her father, a heart surgeon.

A hard path to follow.

Emma had tried. She’d gotten her law degree, then practiced for five years with a top firm in Chicago. But she had hated it.

When Emma finally quit to pursue her writing career, anyone would have thought she’d chosen prostitution as a career change. In her mother’s mind, the two were not that far apart.

“Can’t you choose anything more suitable? Look at the family you come from. Emma, this is a hobby, not a career. Grow up,” Mary Edwards had said.

Emma had known early on medicine wasn’t for her. Law seemed more interesting, mostly because she had a strong sense of justice. However, the reality was, she’d spent her time dealing with corrupt and toxic corporate clients, which had her shaking her head most days.

On the bad days, she felt like her soul was being sucked into a dark abyss of suits and cubicles. Emma had smiled and laughed less, and then when she stopped socializing altogether, she knew things weren’t good.

After her last relationship had ended with yet another successful guy who would please her family, Emma got incredibly drunk and poured her heart out to a friend.

That hadn’t gone as well as she’d hoped.

“What are you going to do, though, Emma?” Jemma had asked. “Go back to college? Why not try private practice? Or maybe being a doctorisin your genes?”
