This was the problem with having friends from Harvard.

Yeah, she knew she was blessed—privileged, as people called it—but everyone deserved to be happy, and Emma hadn’t been happy.

What she had really wanted to do was tell stories. She loved writing. It was by accident one night she’d been lying in bed, reading a steamy novel a little hotter than what she was used to, and inspiration had struck.

I can write this!she’d thought, leaping out of bed to grab her laptop.

Six hours later, Emma had several chapters drafted and couldn’t wait to write more. This carried on every night for months until she had a final draft.

The rest was history.

Readers loved it and bought her next book, and then the next, until she became an international best-seller.

The day she’d resigned, her mother had told her she was an idiot. Using those exact words.

Thanks, Mom.

Five years on and now family dinners and holidays were super awkward. Especially when someone asked how her writing was going.

It wasn’t like she could reply with,Great. Last night, I wrote this sexy scene where the hero gifted his heroine a gorgeous glass butt plug. He’s stretching her, you know, so he can...Well, never mind. Pass the salad, please.

Yeah, no.

Unsurprisingly, Emma was invited to less family events, and when she was, her mother shot her that “mom look,” then diverted conversations to her brother, whowasa doctor.

Oh, and a father to one beautiful little two-year-old girl with dark chocolate skin like her mom. Yes, Kevin was also happily married.

All hail Kevin.

Not that she was salty. Emma loved her brother, his wife, Jada, and their daughter, Asa. They weren’t super close as Jada was a nurse, so between them, they were both busy.

Harper leaned back in her chair and clasped her stomach. “Oh my God, I am so full. Talk about a food baby.”

Daniel choked on the glass of water he was drinking. “Woman, don’t do that to me.”

“Not ready to be a daddy?” Emma asked.

Daniel wiped his mouth with his napkin and slid his eyes to Harper.

Smart man.

In that slow and calculated way Daniel did everything, he didn’t hurry to answer, simply gauged his wife’s mood.

“I’d rather not find out my wife is pregnant while she’s jutting her stomach out and groaning.” His eyes stayed on Harper. The glint within them promised retribution later.

Logan cleared his throat and fiddled with his plate and cutlery. Interesting. It appeared this conversation made him uncomfortable.

“Would you rather me yell it out as I’m leaning over the porcelain bowl with morning sickness, darling?” Harper playfully responded.

Daniel’s eyes filled with fire, and he reached out to take her hand, the one with the enormous diamond on it. “Wife, I’ll give you clear instructions on how I want you to announce we have a baby in there.”

Emma choked on her sip of wine as Harper’s smile widened.

“Anddd, I think that’s my cue to leave,” Emma said. She dropped her napkin on her plate and slid her chair back, lifting her face to smile at the only other guest at the table. When her gaze met Logan’s, she stilled.

Dark scorching eyes greeted her.

Filled with need and filthy promise.
