“I won’t be long,” Emma’s mother replied. “An hour at most. Tell her I’ll be back if she wakes.”

“I will,” the masculine voice agreed.

What on earth?

Emma lay there for a long moment without opening her eyes. Not ready to do this.

The silence was deafening, and she wondered if he’d actually changed his mind and left. But as her lids opened and she blinked away the cloud, she saw Logan standing across the room, staring out the window.

He wore a navy suit, the jacket tossed over the end of her bed, his pale blue shirt crumpled. His hands were in his pockets, and he was as still as the night.

What was he doing here?

What do you think? You nearly died in a plane crash.

Still, for a man who didn’t want a relationship, he sure acted weird.

A lot of people in her life would’ve been worried about her. Her family and friends who loved her must have been terribly upset.

Logan didn’t love her.

Yet here he was, standing in her hospital room.

The last thing I need my board finding out about is me fucking a kinky romance author.

So why had he flown to Chicago to see her?

Logan couldn’t know she had overheard his harsh words. She’d given no explanation to Harper.

Did he think she still wanted to pursue a relationship of sorts with him?

As she watched Logan, she took in his broad back, thick biceps, and the way his dark hair slightly curled on the tips. How did a man so disheveled still look so wealthy and put together, even under the circumstances?

And so handsome, even from behind.

Oddly, Emma found herself feeling as if she had missed him. She’d been unconscious. But she had.

The desire to reach out and have him wrap her in his arms was tugging at her, but she was still confused about why he was there.

Why not just send flowers and wish her well?

Lovers didn’t act like this.

He liked her.

But was ashamed of her career, which was a part of her. She had to remember that.

Emma swallowed, and Logan turned.

Their eyes locked.

“Emma,” his deep voice low.

She cleared her throat some more and tried to move, but the pain was intense, and she grimaced.

Logan moved across the room like a jaguar and steadied her. “Let me help you.”

He pushed a button on the side, and a whirring noise accompanied the sudden incline of her bed. In moments, she was half sitting up.
