“Thank you,” she croaked.

“Do you want water?” he asked, and when she nodded, he lifted the sippy cup with a straw to her lips.

She almost moaned.

Logan put it back on the table and pulled up a chair.

“Hi,” she said, resting her head back.

“Hi,” Logan replied, placing his hand on her leg.

“I must look terrible,” Emma groaned.

“You look alive. That’s all I care about,” Logan’s voice was much softer than usual.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Care,” she clarified.

“I knew what you meant.”

Emma’s eyes left his and drifted over his shoulder.

“I wish you’d stayed,” he suddenly said.

Her eyes snapped back to his, and she laughed. As much as she could manage, in any case, cringing at the pain in her ribs. “So do I.”

Logan winced.

“I didn’t mean that, but also that. I feel responsible...”

“Is that why you’re here?” Emma hated how deflated she felt by the idea that Logan was only here because he felt responsible for her being on the plane.

Everything to do with this gorgeous man was so confusing.

She wanted him.

She didn’t want him.

She wanted him to want her.

But even she could admit it would never work between them.

“No. Yes. God, Emma. I had to see you. To see you like this. With your eyes open, talking, smiling.”

Oh.

Emma gave him a small smile. “Thank you for caring.”

Logan leaned back and let out a long breath. “I thought you were dead.” He shook his head. “I thought you were fucking dead, Emma.”

He ran a hand through his hair and mussed it up. Which looked seriously sexy, but this probably wasn’t the time to mention it.

“I’m not,” she said softly.

“I thought you were gone. I thought I was never going to see you again, and that wasn’t okay. I couldn’t do a damn thing. No one would tell us where you were.” He lifted his eyes to hers, his pitch rising. “Daniel got us drunk so we didn’t do anything.”
