Does she listen? Of course not. It’s Melody, an aching thorn in everyone’s side.

“I would, but I can’t. You see, I just saw Elias escort a sobbing Riley out the door, and when she caught my glance, I’m almost positive she mouthed the wordsget Crew. Either that, or she was telling me to get screwed, but I’m going with the former, just in case. The last thing I want—”

“Shut up,” I spit out, no longer walking and now listening intently. “Riley left with Elias?”

Tipping to the left, she stumbles, causing her drink to slosh out of the full cup. “Pretty sure that’s what I just said.”

I snatch the cup from her hand and tip it upside down, dumping the entire contents before dropping it to the floor and stomping on it with my boot. “You’re cut off.” That’s one less drunken idiot I have to deal with tonight. “Go follow Riley and Elias and tell him he’s been mandated to stay here at the party until cleanup, then walk Riley back to her dorm and stay with her until further notice.”

“Whaaaat?” she bellows. “That’s not fucking fair, Crew. Why do I have to do that shit?”

“Because I told you to. That’s why. Do it now or you’ll be cleaning up after the party all by yourself.”

She stomps her silver heel to the floor in a fit. “You’re such a dick.”

Time is of the essence right now, so I ignore anything else she has to say. Melody will do what I asked because she knows there will be consequences if she doesn’t. We need to get Elias away from Riley before she completely breaks down and he realizes she knows something. But right now, I have to find Scar before Neo goes too far and I have to knock the shit out of him.

Stepping through the sticky mess of Melody’s drink, I continue walking to try and find them, but it’s pointless. They’re gone.

ChapterFive

SCAR

“Where are we going?”I scratch my head, digging my nails into my scalp. This damn hairspray is foreign to my hair and it’s really fucking sticky.

Neo doesn’t respond. He just keeps walking through the tunnels like they’re as familiar to him as his own backyard.

“I’m not scared of you,” I tell him. “I should be. But I’m not. You’ve had every opportunity to physically hurt me, but all you want to do is destroy me emotionally. I can handle that. I’m strong enough.”

He still doesn’t say anything and his silence is really grating on my nerves.

“Ugh. Why did I drink that much?” My arms hang limply down, hands touching his ass. Each step has his cheeks alternating. They rise and they fall. I’m tempted to squeeze them, just out of curiosity. Are they firm? Mushy? Does Neo have a mushy tushy? I start laughing at myself and the sound of my own laughter only makes me do it more.

“What the hell is so funny?”

His gravelly voice hits my ears and my hysterics come to a dead stop. “And he speaks…”

“You were laughing just so I’d talk? What are you, a damn child?”

“Actually, I am. Only eighteen, Neo. Eighteen and a life, you know. Eighteen and a life—”

“If you start singing, so help me, I will toss you into Elias’s lair and leave you.”

“Chill out. I’m not gonna sing. Not for you anyways.”

I’m finally relaxed, hanging over Neo’s shoulder and feeling like I could potentially fall asleep, when he sets me down. My feet catch my fall, but the shift of the blood that was pooling in my head sets me off-balance. Two hands land on my hips, steadying me. “You could have just let me fall,” I tell him. “I wouldn’t have held it against you.”

“Sure you wouldn’t. You’d hold it against me until graduation, no doubt.”

“No,” I shake my head, smacking my dry lips together, “I’ve got bigger things to hold against you. For starters, you just carried me down a tunnel, when there’s a raging party going on. Ya know, I got the go-ahead to have fun tonight. Not that I needed permission from anyone. But either way, you ruined it.” I tilt my head slightly, quizzically reading him. “Why?”

“Because Jagger wants a drinking buddy for the night and Crew is too fucking obsessed with you to tell you no.”

A heavy breath of laughter climbs up my vocal cords. “Obsessed? That’s an odd choice of words coming from someone who’s life mission is to punish me for a crime I didn’t commit.” I poke a sharp finger to his chest. “That someone being you.”

“Don’t touch me.” He slaps my hand away. Not aggressively, but enough for me to drop it.

I poke him again, conscious of the saying, don’t poke the bear. But tonight, I’m feeling brave. I’m feeling free. And I’m feeling like it’s high time to put Neo Saint in his place. “Oh yeah? What are you gonna do about it? Kill me?”
