In a swift motion, he grabs my wrist, squeezing with tenacity. “Don’t tempt me, Scar.”

His expression is desensitized and the smoldering glare he has pinned on me is chilling. “You want me dead, Neo?”

“Not gonna lie. It’d make things easier.”

“Easier for who? Maddie? Crew? Jagger—”

He squeezes harder, draining the blood from my hand. “For me.”

I cut a glance at his hand, suddenly not feeling like this is a joke. The seriousness in Neo’s tone is bringing me a few steps down to reality. My head is still spinning and my stomach is pooling with warmth from the alcohol, yet chills are dancing across my skin. “Why do you care if I drink tonight? If I remember right, you don’t give a damn about me.”

“That’s true. I don’t. What I do care about is finding and avenging my sister, and all you are is a distraction. Jagger and Crew need to stay focused and you’re in the way.”

“Oh,” I chuckle, my eyes sweeping the walls surrounding us, “and this is your way of getting meoutof the way?”

“It’s a start.” He jerks my arm, walking with me at his side.

I follow along, since he’s not giving me a choice in the matter. “Where are you taking me?”

“Elias is with Riley, so I know he’s not down here—”

I gasp. “Riley is with Elias? No! She’s probably terrified.”

“And I give a fuck, why?”

“Obviously you don’t because all you give a fuck about is yourself, but Riley could blow this whole thing out of the water. She’ll cave. I know she will.”

“Wow. You sure do have a lot of faith in your friend, The Guardian.”

Of course I have faith in Riley. However, I also know she’s easily intimidated, insanely awkward, and speaks without thinking. “This has nothing to do with believing in her skills and everything to do with the fact that she’s alone with a psychopath.”

“Riley’s fine.”

“How can you be so sure?”

He quirks a brow with a swift glance at me. “Do I dare say, trust me?”

“Absolutely not.”

“As I was saying before you interrupted me, Riley is with Elias, so I know he’s not down here, so we’re gonna do a little digging.”

“And you need me, why?”

“Because you’re less trouble when I’ve got my eyes on you. So you’re coming with me.”

I jerk my arm back, grabbing his attention, but he doesn’t let go. “Please don’t tell me we’re going to his lair.” My head shakes in utter disapproval. “Last time Jagger and I got locked in. I can’t go back. What if someone locks us in again.”

“I can guarantee I won’t be locked in. As for you, we could only be so lucky.”

The vacancy in his tone is unsettling. I don’t think for a second Neo would try and save me if I got locked in.

“Why do you still hate me so much? You know I didn’t push your sister. You know I’m not the stalker. So, why?”

When his response is a malevolent laugh, I jerk my arm again, this time harder. My voice rises to a blaring shout. “Dammit! Tell me why!”

Finally, I free my arm, but not without repercussions. With his arms draped at his sides, chin tipped, he walks into me, chest bumping mine, and with a thud, my back crashes into the rock wall. My heart gallops in my chest when he cages me in with two hands pressed on either side of my body against the wall.

“You wanna know why I hate you so much? Why I willalwayshate you?”
