I sink back in my chair, getting comfortable, all the while watching Neo out of the corner of my eye.

What is he thinking about at this very moment?

ChapterNine

NEO

Stop fucking looking at me!

I wanna scream it at her, but I don’t because it means she’ll know I notice. How can I not? Her eyes are burning into the side of my head. It feels like her stare is eating away at my skull, while infusing my brain with her poison. Making me think irrational thoughts, such as, how sexy she looks with the top three buttons of her uniform shirt undone. Nonchalantly, I steal a glance, avoiding her eyes. Sure enough, the skin of her cleavage is peeking out, and fuck if it doesn’t make my cock jump.

She’s the enemy, Neo. Even the devil was once an angel.

My eyes skate up, locking with hers.

Busted.

I snarl in disgust, giving her the idea that I’m appalled by her presence. However, in order for her to believe that fallacy, I’d have to make every attempt to move away from her. Yet I don’t because the thought of seeing her sandwiched between Jagger and Crew for an hour every day appalls me more than she does.

Rock and a hard place. I don’t like her. Don’t want her. But I don’t want anyone else to want her either. Especially them.

Maybe it’s time I do something about that.

I’m torn away from my thoughts when my phone vibrates on the table. Scar looks at it, followed by the guys. I snatch it off the table quickly when I see that it’s Maddie calling.

Scar leans over, being the nosey shit she is. “Who is that?”

“Hasn’t anyone ever told you curiosity killed the cat?” I scoot my chair back, not bothering to push it in as I slide behind the row to leave.

What the hell does she want? I told her not to call unless it was an emergency. I get it. She’s bored. She expresses that multiple times a day. But right now, she has to stay bored because that boredom will keep her safe.

“What’s up?” Jagger asks, but my response is an exaggerated sigh.

Mr. Collins gives me a look, and when I catch his stare, he quickly snaps his attention back to the class. “Attention up here,” he says. “Now, who read last night's required passage from Frank Herbert’sDune?”

Thank fuck I’m outta here because I sure as hell didn’t read that shit.

I dip out of the open door, closing it just as far as it was before I made my exit. With my phone in hand, I tap Call Back.

Maddie picks up on the first ring.

“Jesus, Neo. What took you so long?” Her voice is a whisper and she should not need to whisper.

“I’m in the middle of class. What the fuck do you think took me so long?”

“Well, it’s a good thing you called back. Someone’s in the house.”

My feet move quickly down the hall as I head straight for the exit. “Maddie,” I press. “Tell me how you know this? You better not be outside that room.”

“I was bored. So damn bored. I did really well with therapy today and my physical therapist told me I needed to move around more in my wheelchair. These tunnels creep me the hell out, Neo.”

“Dammit! I thought I made it clear that you cannot leave that room under no circumstances.”

Still whispering, she says, “You’re ignoring the fact that I just told you someone is in your house. I’m not playing. Someone is here.”

“Get your ass back in that room. I’m on my way.”

“I can’t. I’m sort of…stuck.”
