Huffing and puffing, she presses her fingers to her temples and rubs aggressively.

Scar should have no reason to assume I feel anything toward her, except extreme loathing. I’ve never once given her a glimpse at my tortured mind. Sure, my fingers have swam in her pussy, but that wasn’t to pleasure her; it was to humiliate her during class. I may have failed, but it was a nice attempt and sure as hell a nice escape from Mr. Collin’s lecture. Aside from that, she doesn’t know how hard I’ve trained my mind to dislike her, because a tiny space in my heart says she isn’t so bad. But she is. She is that bad. She’s a forbidden fruit, and while it might taste sweeter, it’s forbidden for a reason—it’s a poison that can ruin my life. I refuse to put my fate in her hands.

Scar gets on her feet. Not even looking at me, she says, “Where is Maddie’s room? I need to talk to her and tell her the truth. She deserves that much.”

I’m still seated on the bench, peering up at her. “You won’t be telling Maddie anything. We’re going to keep this reunion short and sweet. She and I will fill you in on why she’s here and why it needs to remain a secret. Jagger and Crew can’t know yet. Do you understand me?” I grit out, so she realizes how serious I am. “Had your idiot friend not helped herself to our home, you wouldn’t know either.”

“I’m willing to hear you out before I make a decision—for Maddie. But don’t think for a second I’m acting like your girlfriend. Stage a breakup if needed, but I will not play like that. Not with the likes of you.”

There it is again. That disgusted look. I know I’ve treated the girl like shit, but she looks at me like I have the face of Michael Myers.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I finally ask her.

“Like what?”

“With such revolt. Like I’m the ugliest thing you’ve ever laid eyes on?”

“If you really have to ask, then you’re more of a sociopath than I’ve given you credit for. Now, where is she?”

I tip my head to the right, gesturing toward the open door. “Just keep going, you’ll find her.”

With a sour expression, she scoffs. “You’ve been making her stay in the tunnels?”

I quickly jump to my feet. “The girl’s got it fucking made. Her room is immaculate. She’s got a private bathroom, kitchenette, and she has a nurse and physical therapist that come in daily during the week while we’re at school.”

Scar shakes her head in disbelief and I’m feeling pretty judged right now. Keeping Maddie’s whereabouts a secret is necessary. Someone tried to kill her, and until we know who and why, her safety is a priority. No one can be trusted.

There’s only one thing left to do. Bring in and bring down Jude Beckett. And for my grand finale, I’ll expose Scar.

As she walks away, heading to the door, I’m left with a thousand different thoughts in my head. What have I done? What am I going to do? Why the hell does it bother me that she hates me as much as I hate her?

ChapterTen

SCAR

“This is unreal.”I wrap my arms around Maddie for the umpteenth time, still not believing my eyes. “How are you here?” I step back, hands on her shoulders. “And out of bed?”

A broad smile spreads across her face, and she lifts a shoulder. “Neo saved me.”

“But how? You were in a coma, Mads.”

“Was,is the operative word.” Her shoulders dance, as if this is the most casual thing ever. “He woke me up.”

There’s a tall stool to the left, so I grab it and take a seat, knowing this conversation is going to take a while. My only hope is that Neo stays out of it. “None of this makes sense. Please, make it make sense to me.” I hold my hand out, noticing that it’s still shaking. She’s really here.

“Well,” she begins, popping a piece of gum in her mouth and balling the wrapper between her fingers. “I was asleep, obviously, but Neo sent in a new team of doctors and security guards because he was worried someone would hurt me. My memory is still missing from that day and even the weeks prior to the fall, but he said someone pushed me.”

“Did he also tell you he thought it was me that pushed you?”

Her head tilts slightly, eyes wide. “Oh no, he did not?”

“Oh yes. He sure did. In fact, he made it a point to make my life hell after your fall. To say it hasn’t been easy is an understatement.”

“But he knows the truth now and you forgave him? I mean, you two are together?” Her questioning tone leads me to believe she’s not buying it. I mean, why would she? She’s seen firsthand how much Neo has hated me all these years.

“Actually, there’s something you should know—”

“And what you should know is that the past has been laid to rest.” Neo comes in the room and my eyes shoot over my shoulder. Stepping behind me, his hands rest on my shoulders and he begins massaging them.Who the fuck is this guy?Just a couple days ago, he said I was toxic and he could barely stand being near me, and now, he’s rubbing my shoulders?
