Four more minutes. That’s it. That’s as long as my curiosity will last. Then I’ll go check it out.

The darkness hinders my vision. Shadows play with my eyes. The silence screams at me to get out.

Dammit! I grip the door handle. What’s he doing in there?

A tapping noise echoes in my small car. I jump and turn to the passenger side window.

Lix’s cool blue eyes meet mine. He smiles and waves at me.

Shit! This guy’s always one step ahead of me. I smirk. I’m caught. There’s no denying or escaping it now. I wave, reaching for the button to roll down the window.

He sets his forearm on the edge of the door and leans in. “Good evening, Chosen,” he says in that smooth, husky spine-perking voice.

“Hello, Lix.”

“Lix?” His lips quirk. “Are we friends now, Chosen?” Thick sarcasm weaves in his deep tenor. “If so, do you normally stalk your friends?”

“Not normally, but for you, it appears I’m making an exception,” I say between pinched lips.

He’s so annoying. He knows why I’m here and what I’m doing, but he’s got to fuck with me.

“Really?” His brow arches, and the light dancing in the street enhances the blue in his eyes. “And what other exceptions do you plan on making for me?”

“I don’t know.” I hold my tight grin, grinding my teeth. He’s a sarcastic ass. Maybe I won’t kill him before I find out the truth. That seems like a good exception. And it’ll keep me out of jail.

He clicks the unlock button on the door and gets in my car. I should stop him, but I’ll only get closer to Lix by getting close. His woodsy scent fills the small space between us. My skin flushes with heat. My reactions to this man irritate the hell out of me.

“How about kissing?” He turns toward me, dropping his backpack on the floorboard while getting comfortable in the seat. His heavy view scrapes over my tense and heated body. “Or do you kiss all your friends? If so, that’s exceptional.”

“I’m an exceptional woman,” I reply with a tight smile.

“Like Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Anne Moody, Joan of Arc, and Rosa Parks? They were exceptional women.”

“Well, no. Not like them.” I flush with embarrassment from the comparison.

The corner of his mouth lifts, enhancing the fullness of his lips. “Why not?”

“I haven’t come close to their accomplishments,” I admit, uncomfortable with explaining or defending myself to him.

“Perhaps, not yet, but I believe you may someday. However, as flattered as I am, you might need to give up stalking this subject. It could go bad for you.”

“How else am I supposed to get the story?”

“I told you there’s no story for you here, Chosen,” he says with a long-winded stare.

My heart beats fiercely and rapidly. My breath seizes. What’s he going to do? I liberate my breath when he picks up his backpack and gets out of the car.

Air recirculates, filling my tight lungs and expanding my vigor.

He walks around to my side and opens the door.

I look up at him. My heart goes back to slamming into my chest, and warning bells pump through my veins.

He tosses his backpack over his shoulder and thrusts out his hand.

I look at it. Does he expect me to reach for it?

A slow smile thins the fullness from his lips, revealing my answer. “You wanted to know what I was doing here, didn’t you?”
