“Yes. Two are dead, one is in jail and won’t talk, and one I can’t find. Lix is it. If I’m going to find out the truth about that day, he’s the only one left I can get it from.”

“Chosen, they did an investigation. All the boys were cleared of any charges. Why can’t you let it go?”

“Yes.” I huff, ignoring her logic. “They were cleared because none of them would talk. They all stuck to the same story. And you saw the picture of Felix Daxon! He had something to do with my uncle’s death. I know he did. I just need to find out what.”

“Why don’t you just ask him about it?”

“Oh no. I learned my lesson already. I asked Jenson Collins, and that got me nowhere. I need to go at it from a different angle.”

“And what angle is that?”

I point at a picture.

Selina walks closer to the table. “Who’s that?”

“Mama Daxon.” I pick up the photo and look down at it. It’s like looking right into Lix’s eyes. They’re identical and just as mesmerizing. “I’ve been doing some digging into Mama Daxon. She’s the key to me getting to Lix.”

“Oh, I know that look.” She wags a finger at me. “It’s like the time you made me break into that tanning salon to find out if illegal gambling was going on.”

“Hey, I thought it was a good source!”

“Darren Winkle? He was your source?” She shakes her head. “That guy was the world’s biggest liar and asshole.”

“I didn’t know. I came a year after you.”

“All you had to do was tell me who your source was and—”

“A good journalist never gives up their source.”

“Yeah, well, it nearly got us arrested so you could complete your assignment for school. I don’t think your professor expected you to go out and break the next big story. But no, not Chosen Ashley. Go big or go home.” She laughs.

“You know it.” I snicker with a head jostle. “It was a lesson learned. Just like Jenson Collins. But don’t you worry. I have a plan.”

“Yeah.” Selina’s lips thin. “That’s what I’m afraid of.”

Chapter 5

I stay a couple of cars behind.

I took a few weeks off from the paper and let the college kid go. If I’m going to find out the truth, it’s time for me to put all my time and energy into Lix.

His SUV turns down a side street and pulls over. I follow suit a few houses back. I scrunch down in my seat, watching him get out. He glances around before crossing the street. He walks toward a house with that same calm strut as the other night in the bar. Oh, that walk. The sway of his shoulders and long strides of his legs.

He disappears after he passes the driveway.

I sit up straight and focus on the house.

I glance at my cell. 9:23 p.m.

What’s he doing in there? A job? A girlfriend?

I don’t care if he has a girlfriend. Of course, he would. He probably has a slew of them.

Or could he be on one of his escorts?

Should I get out?

I glance at my cell. 9:26 p.m.
