I park in front of Chosen’s apartment. The cop pulls up behind me. Great, now I’ll get a ticket for rushing to the surprise visit.

I roll down my window and place my hands on the steering wheel to wait for the officer. Maybe Chosen won’t see what’s going on. I’ll cooperate and head in without her knowing I’ve attracted the authorities to her home.

Checking the rearview mirror, I watch the officer get out. But the female cop doesn’t head my way. Instead, she’s walking to Chosen’s apartment. I jump out and rush toward her.

The cop glances at me. “Hello, Mr. Daxon. Fancy meeting you here,” she says with a sly smile.

It takes all but a second for me to recognize the cop. Officer Starr. I’ve had a few run-ins with her. The last time was at the police station when I went with Harper to get a restraining order—long story.

“I could say the same to you.” What’s she doing here? I smile back at her, keeping up the pace. “Officer Starr, are you stalking me?”

She smirks. “If I am, I hear it’s something my friend and I have in common,” she says and knocks on the door.

I stare down at her. “Your friend?”

The door swings open.

“Lix!” Chosen says my name in a high pitch.

Yeah, I surprised her.

“Selina.” Chosen nods.

Selina? Is she on a first-name basis with the cop?

Chosen’s smile remains forced in place. “Come in.”

I’m intrigued now.

I thrust out my hand. “Ladies first.”

Selina sets her hands on her wide belt and casually enters my girlfriend’s home. I follow, confused yet curious.

It’s not the first time I’ve entered a home where I don’t know what I’m walking into. But this is Chosen’s home. I should have some idea why there’s a cop casually entering it. I thought we were doing good with this relationship shit. It’s been a few weeks. We’ve gone out on some dates. Went to dinner with my brother and their girlfriends. She pops by my worksite, the office, and my home unannounced. Not to mention the numerous sleepovers.

“I just came to pick up my level,” Selina says and meanders toward the kitchen. “Remember, I lent it to you to hang your stuff when you moved in?”

“Yeah,” Chosen replies, viewing me from the corner of her eye as we tailgate the cop.

“Oh good, coffee,” Selina says before grabbing a mug from the cupboard and helping herself to a cup. She takes a sip. Her eyes sift over the mug from Chosen to me.

“Oh yeah.” Chosen rushes to a closet and pulls out a yellow level. “This one.” She holds it out with a shaky hand.

“That’s it.” Selina smiles and grabs it. “You don’t mind if I take this with me?” She lifts the mug.

“No,” Chosen says between thinned lips.

“Great.” Selina grins. “It’s always nice to see you, Mr. Daxon.”

“Lix,” I renounce, confusion bursting from all my seams.

“Lix.” She cheers with the coffee. “See ya later, Chosen.” She heads out the door, holding the mug in the air.

“Bye,” Chosen replies with an open-handed wave the cop can’t see.

The door slams shut, and I raise an eyebrow.

“We went to college together.” Chosen plops down in the chair at the kitchen table.
