Brett moves toward Willa. “What did they say?”

“I explained to them that you’d run JES. You’d train the volunteers. Felix and Cole will do the field training. Harper and I will do my part, and we’d also train any volunteers interested in that part.”

Mom moves in closer, carrying the new addition to our family in her arms. Her eyes hit Brett, Cole, and me. “What’s JES?”

“JES stands for Julia’s Escort Service,” Brett explains. “Selina and Willa talked to the local law enforcement agency about making it legit. It’ll be sort of like the Neighborhood Watch.”

Mom scowls, readjusting Zach in her arms. “I thought, now that you’re married and have a son, you were going to stop with the escort business.”

“Mom.” Brett sighs. “I won’t be doing the escorts and—”

“Maria,” Willa interrupts. “It’s safer for your sons and the volunteers. The model is still the same. Women can call the domestic center and get help without involving the police. But there will be policies and procedures they will have to follow, and JES will have the backing of the police if needed.”

“Mom,” I say, glancing down at Zach in her arms. She just got her sons back and now has a grandchild. I understand her fear. “Most women won’t call the police. You know that. We must be there for those women. And for their children.”

She looks down at Zach. “I know.” A tear drops from her eye. “You’re right. I don’t mean to be selfish. I just don’t want to lose any of you.”

Cole sets his hand on Mom’s shoulder. “You won’t. And now that it’ll be legit, you don’t have to worry about Lix getting arrested.” He chuckles.

“Hey!” I perk up. “Why am I the one getting arrested? It could happen to either of you as well.”

“Brett and I know how to stay under the radar. Ask Officer Starr.” Cole turns to Selina with a wayward grin.

Selina raises her hands. “All I can say is I know Lix jogs in his jeans. I don’t know about you two.”

“Brett doesn’t jog,” Cassie laughs, patting Brett on the arm.

“And Cole does it at the gym on the treadmill,” Harper informs with quirking lips. “He says it’s better on his joints.”

“It is! And I won’t get heat stroke,” Cole points out in his defense. “Mom, I have a better chance of that happening than getting hurt doing an escort.”

Brett steps forward. “We know what we’re doing.”

“You need to trust us,” I say, backing up Cole and Brett. “We will be fine. I promise.” I touch her shoulder. “And you know I know how to keep a promise.”

A FEW HOURS LATER

“Oh, what a beautiful day!” Chosen walks into the living room in a slinky nightgown. It’s my favorite. Cotton but revealing. “I got you a present.” Chosen moves toward me and sits down on my lap on the sofa, holding a bag.

“You got me a present?” I touch my chest. “Me?”

She giggles. “Yes.”

I spy suspiciously at it from the corner of my eye. “What is it?”

“Something I thought I’d never do,” she says, rocking the bag.

I take it and pull a stack of papers out.

“It’s a book!” I glance at her. “So you found something worth slaying that beast for?”

“Yes.” She touches my cheek. “You.”

I look down at the front page.
