"Wow, you're really good at this," Julian commented, his voice breathless with exhilaration. Julian couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as he watched Bear in action.

Despite the danger, there was something undeniably sexy about seeing the enforcer in his element—his muscles tense and poised for action, his jaw clenched in determination.

"It's not the time, kid," Bear grunted, not taking his eyes off the road. "Call Angelo. Now," he commanded, his voice firm but surprisingly calm given the circumstances.

Julian's heart pounded in his chest as he fumbled for his phone, finally pulling it from his pocket and dialing his brother's number. The panic that had settled over him began to dissipate ever so slightly. He focused on Bear's steady presence beside him, trusting that the man would get them out of this mess.

"Angelo!" Julian said when his brother picked up. "It's me, and—"

"We're en route, and we have a tail," Bear said, as steady as if he wasn't also weaving a car through traffic at speeds. He rattled off their location and an efficient series of other terms, all of which passed by Julian as if they were talking in code.

"Got it. Keep me updated on your location," Angelo said, his voice cool and all business. But then something else crept into his commanding tone. "Julian… stay with Bear. Listen to him. He'll protect you."

Julian's hand tightened on his phone. "I will."

"I'll see you soon," Angelo said firmly, before hanging up.

As Julian lowered the phone, he couldn't help but notice the way Bear's knuckles whitened around the steering wheel, a testament to his fierce determination to keep them safe. Though the situation was dire, the sight sent a shiver down Julian's spine: one part fear, one part relief at having someone there that he could rely on.

As the adrenaline surged through his veins, Julian's heart pounded in his chest, matching the rhythm of the tires screeching against the asphalt.

"Stay low, Julian!" Bear's commanding voice cut through the chaos, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. In a swift and calculated move, Bear gripped the steering wheel with a firm grip, his knuckles turning white as he expertly maneuvered their vehicle through the labyrinthine city streets. Julian watched in awe as Bear's years of experience manifested in his every action, his movements precise and decisive.

"Can't say they don't know how to keep us on our toes," Bear grumbled, his voice laced with an edge of urgency.

Julian's gaze darted between the side mirror and the road ahead, his breath held in anticipation. "They're catching up," he said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through his veins.

With a surge of speed, Bear deftly weaved through traffic, his reflexes honed to perfection. Julian clung to his seat, his gaze fixed on Bear's unwavering focus. There was a calm confidence in Bear's demeanor, an unspoken reassurance that washed over Julian like a soothing balm—but a muscle was twitching in his jaw as he worked hard to keep them ahead of their challengers.

"We're losing them, but they're persistent," Bear noted, his voice filled with a mix of frustration and determination.

With impeccable timing, Bear swerved into an alleyway, the tires screeching in protest against the sudden change in direction. The pursuing car followed suit, its presence a constant threat at their heels.

The alleyway narrowed, testing the limits of their maneuverability. Julian's breath caught in his throat as Bear skillfully guided the car through the tight space, threading the needle with precision. Their pursuers struggled to keep up, their attempts hindered by the constraints of the chase.

Suddenly, the pursuing car closed in with frightening speed, ramming into the back of their vehicle. Metal groaned and glass shattered, filling the air with a cacophony of destruction.

Julian's world turned upside down, both literally and metaphorically. The world outside seemed to spin in a chaotic blur as their car was sent careening out of control, spinning wildly.

The last thing he heard before blacking out was Bear yelling his name.

Chapter eight

"Hey,kid.Wakeup."Bear's deep voice penetrated the fog in Julian's mind, drawing him back to consciousness. Tender fingers brushed against his cheek, a stark contrast to the rough exterior he usually associated with Bear.

"Wh-what happened?" Julian stammered. He blinked up at Bear's worried expression as the memories of the car chase came flooding back. He was still in his seat, the car on its side. Bear was cradling Julian's head in his hands, his touch firm but gentle.

"Car flipped. We're okay, though." There was a gun in Bear's free hand, and a spatter of vivid red blood on his shirt. Whatever Julian had missed, it had clearly been eventful.

Bear saw where he was looking. "We're okay. They're not. But we need to move before any of their friends get here. Can you move?" Bear asked, his eyes scanning Julian's body.

"Y-yeah, I think so," Julian replied, his voice shaky as he tried to sit up, wincing at the pain that shot through his ribs. He had never been in a car accident before, let alone one that felt like it had come straight out of an action movie.

"Good. We need to get out of here." Bear's tone was all business, but Julian couldn't help but notice the way his eyes lingered on him with concern. It was a side of Bear he'd rarely seen: protective in a way that had nothing to do with duty alone.

"Thank you," Julian whispered, his heart swelling with gratitude and affection for the man who had just saved his life.

"Save the thanks for later," Bear said gruffly, though the ghost of a smile played at the corner of his lips. "We've got more important things to worry about right now."
