"He might not take it well," Bear admitted, his fingers absently tracing circles on Julian's abdomen, causing goosebumps to rise in their wake. "But I can handle it."

It was a bold statement, but one that felt true in every fiber of his being. What he'd just done—it wasn't something that felt like a betrayal. Not any more.

"Really?" Julian teased, rolling onto his side to face Bear, the smile never leaving his lips. "You're not even a little bit scared of my big brother?"

"Of course I am," Bear replied.

But there was something more important than that.

The way that Julian's body had moved with his own, the light in Julian's eyes as he'd obeyed Bear's commands, the gentle relief in his body language as he'd given himself up to Bear…

It hadn't just felt like a quick fuck. It had feltright.

I'm afraid of what this will do to everything I've helped the Toscanos build,Bear thought.

But I'm more afraid of never experiencing this again.

With that intimate thought, he leaned in to press a tender kiss on Julian's lips, his rough hands cupping the younger man's face.

"Besides," Bear added with a smirk, gently nudging Julian's thigh with his own, "if you've got enough energy to joke around, then you've certainly got enough energy for round two."

Julian's laughter filled the room, bright and joyful like a symphony. As they laughed together, their bodies pressed close once more, it was impossible not to feel the sheer happiness and contentment that washed over them, washing their circumstances away.

Chapter seven

ThewindruffledJulian'shair as Bear and Julian sped down the highway towards Angelo's mansion. He leaned back in his seat, stealing glances at Bear's strong profile. He admired the way Bear's knuckles tightened around the steering wheel—a grip that spoke volumes about his strength and determination.

When Bear had told him about the whole 'going undercover in shitty motel rooms' plan, Julian hadn't exactly been a fan. He hadn't come all the way back home just to stay locked inside watching daytime TV for a week, peeping out from behind dingy curtains to check for killers lurking by the ice machine.

But it turned out that there were much better ways to kill time. Step one: get locked in with someone you've fantasized about for years…

Julian crossed his legs, and smirked at the ache of carpet burn on his knees. Yeah, surprisingly, getting fucked senseless for days on end was a little better than channel-flipping and eating peanuts.

He sent a silent thanks up to the guy who had shot at him. Thanks, man. You're the best wingman.

Even if, after a week in the hands of Angelo Toscano, that guy probably wasn't exactly in the right state to hear his thanks.

Julian gazed out of the window, watching the road slip behind them in the side mirrors. After several days of nothing happening, Angelo's men thought that the threat had abated enough for Julian to come out of hiding.

If Julian focused on the rear view, he didn't have to look ahead, where the end of his holiday was coming up.

And the end of his time with Bear.

But there was something else in the rear view besides navel-gazing…

Julian frowned, keeping his eyes on it. Bear took them around a corner, and changed lanes, and yet it still stayed there, at the same pace as them…

His heart raced, a mixture of excitement and fear coursing through his veins. "Bear… Is it just me, or does that car seem to be following us?"

Bear's eyes were narrowed. "Good spot. I've been watching them for a while."

He slipped through traffic, taking a traffic light at the last moment. The car behind them shot through the red light after them, leaving the blare of horns in their wake.

Julian stared. "Yeah, that was no coincidence."

Bear tugged Julian away from the window. "Hang on, kid," he warned, his voice low and steady.

Julian gripped the armrest, adrenaline pumping through his system. He watched in awe as Bear expertly maneuvered the car, dodging traffic and swerving around obstacles while keeping a safe distance from their pursuers.
