I feel the bile rising in my throat. I’m panicking and I need a clear head if I’m going to make it out of this alive.

“What do you want from me?”

“I just wanna finish what we started all those years ago.” His eyes look manic as they travel down my body.

“There’s nothing to finish. You finished it that night. You took everything from me.” I’m trying to stay calm, but my heart is pounding, and I swear I can hear it in my ears.

“I might have had the girl, but I haven’t had the woman. I can’t let Maddox have all the fun.”

I move around the table, and he follows me from the opposite direction. I’m trying to think on my feet as quickly as possible. If I run towards the kitchen then I’m sure there's something in there I could use to defend myself.

If I run towards the door, I could leave. I want to kill him, but I don’t want him to get the opportunity to touch me. I want to catch him off guard.

“Don’t make this difficult, Maribelle.” I make my way around the table and start to head towards the front door.

He tries to run after me but slips on Maddox’s phone. I take the opportunity to grab the handle and open the door.

“Bitch, I will get what I want from you. I don’t know why you’re making this so difficult,” I hear him yell, as he’s scrambling to get off the floor.

After I’m out the door, I realize that I don’t have keys to any of the cars. I don’t have shoes on and I’m not wearing any pants. I don’t have any choice but to keep running.

I don’t even care about the looks I get as I’m running down the street, practically naked. I run like my life depends on it, because it does.

Two blocks later, and after many glances over my shoulder, I find myself at Firefly.

“Belle?” Natasha looks me up and down. I don’t blame her; I’d be confused too.

“I need help, please.” She doesn’t hesitate to pull me to the back room. I honestly wasn’t sure if she was the type to help someone. I’m still not sure if I’m going to owe her something when this is all said and done.

“What’s going on?”

“A man just came into my house. He tried to attack me. I had no choice but to run. I don’t wanna call the police. I just needed somewhere to go until I can figure out what to do next.” I can’t catch my breath, and I’m trying to choose my words carefully so that she doesn’t ask too many questions.

“Of course. Let me grab you some clothes and you can call a friend or one of the guys can give you a ride back home and make sure he’s gone.” I smile in appreciation but don’t respond.

She comes back a few minutes later with a pair of shorts and some flip flops. “This is the best I can do. I found it in the lost and found. I have some outfits, but they’re for the stage.”

“This is perfect. Thanks. What do I owe you?” She stares at me.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, for your help. What do I owe ya?”

She almost looks offended. “You don’t owe me anything. I’m just helping out.”

Sometimes it’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that some people just help others. It took me a long time to realize that Maddox is a good person, despite what I wanted to believe about him when we first met.

“John, can you come to my office, please.”

A big man––probably over six feet––with the largest muscles I’ve ever seen comes into the office. “Yes, ma’am?” He glances in my direction, but his full attention is on Natasha.

“Can you see to it that Miss Belle gets home. Make sure she’s safe before you leave.”

“Sure thing.”

I stand up from my chair but turn around before I leave the room. “Thanks for everything, Natasha.”

“You’re welcome. Try not to be so surprised that people want to help you,” she says.
