Sophia.

“Sophia… Are you okay?” I ask, panicked. I’m not sure when the last time we had a conversation over the phone was.

“Knox,” I hear her whisper faintly into the phone.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I just wanted to hear your voice. I’m stupid.” She’s crying. She also sounds a little drunk.

“Do I need to come over?”

She laughs dryly. “The last thing you need to do is come over. I can’t be anywhere near you.”

“Why’s that?” I ask, even though I know the answer.

“You’re like poison to me. It makes me feel sick to be around you, but I feel sick when you’re not around. Explain that to me.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose, taking a deep breath. I can’t explain any of it, because that’s exactly how I feel too.

“Listen, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t start that shit, Knox. We both know you’re never sorry about anything. Knox Kingston is the King of Kings, the King of breaking hearts, he says and does exactly what he wants all the time, no matter who he hurts in the process.” She scoffs.

She couldn’t be further from the truth, but it’s hard to argue with a drunk person.

“Sophie.”

“No. Don’t. This was a mistake,” she cries out before hanging up on me.

This feels like a never-ending battle with Sophia, and it’s nobody’s fault but mine.

I wakeup at seven the next morning, but not from my phone ringing, this time it’s just out of habit. After that weird conversation with Sophia last night, I turned my phone completely off and let myself get the rest I needed.

“Knox! Ivy made breakfast,” I hear Kai yell down the stairs.

I head upstairs, still reeling from my conversation with Sophia last night.

“This smells really good. Thanks, Ivy,” I say, walking into the kitchen.

“You’re welcome. Rough night?” she asks, her brows furrowed.

I must look as shitty as I feel.

“You could say that.”

“I’ve got a question,” Kinsley says, walking into the kitchen.

“That’s scary.” Kane laughs, and Kinsley picks up a biscuit from the table and tosses it in his direction.

“Seriously, guys? How old are we?” Kai asks grumpily.

“What’s your question, Kins?” I ask before a fight over immaturity starts up between my siblings.

“Can Sophia stay with us for a while?”

I nearly choke on my bread. Kane walks over laughing, slapping my back.
