“You good, bro?” He grins.

I’ll fucking punch him.

“Why would she do that? Doesn’t she have a place of her own?” I ask.

The thought of Sophia being under the same roof as me for any amount of time has me on edge.

“She does have a place of her own.” Kinsley scowls in my direction. “She called me in a panic this morning because her landlord called. Turns out she lives below an elderly couple, and they flooded their apartment. It leaked into hers and they both have some major water damage.”

Everyone in the room stops to look at me. I realize that the decision is going to ultimately end up being mine, because to them it looks like I have some kind of irrational issue with her.

“For the record, she didn’t even ask to stay here. She told me she was going to get a hotel room. I just felt like that was silly given how much extra room we have around here. She’s like family. We’ve known her our whole lives. She helped me when I needed it the most.” Kinsley is really pleading her case, but there isn’t a need for that. She knows I’d never let Sophia go anywhere else.

“It’s fine. She can stay in the guest room upstairs,” I say as Kins claps her hands and runs over, throwing her arms around my neck.

“Thanks, Knox.”

I don’t know what I just got myself into.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Kane asks once Kinsley leaves the room.

“Why wouldn’t it be?” I snap, harsher than I intended.

“It’s just all the shit from the past… Aren’t you worried about old feelings coming back up and all that?” he asks.

“Did I ask for a therapy session?”

He puts his hands up in surrender. “Sorry, man. I wasn’t trying to piss you off. It was just an observation.

I sigh, dropping my hand to the kitchen counter, gripping the side. “I’m sorry. I’m just stressed out.”

“I get it. I know you’re going through a lot with Dad and everything, I shouldn’t have put my nose in somewhere it didn’t belong.”

“It’s fine, Kane. Really.”

“You really need to do something to relieve some stress. Take a vacation or get laid, or something.”

“Fuck off, Kane.” I glare at him.

He puts his hands up in surrender, laughing, before leaving the room.

“Thanks again, Knox.” Kinsley pops her head back into the room.

“No problem, Kins.” I try to force a smile out.

“She was upset with me for even offering, but she finally came around. She’s supposed to be here in a couple of hours. I have class, so will you be here?”

“I’ll make sure I’m around,” I reassure her, even though it pains me to think about being alone here with Sophia.

Especially after last night.

Chapter 6

Sophia

This is a really fucking bad idea.

“Sophia, I think this is a terrible idea.” Becca’s words mirror my thoughts.
