“You think I don’t know that? What other choice do I have?” I throw my hands up, even though I know she can’t see me through the phone.

“You could always stay here,” she offers––again.

“I’m not going to do that to you,” I tell her, throwing clothes into my bag.

“Why? You’re always welcome.”

“I know, but you guys are already in a small enough space, it would be worse if I were there.” I sigh, thinking about the tiny one-bedroom apartment that Becca and her daughter share. She had to sell her house when her husband passed, and they’ve been living in that apartment ever since.

“I just hate the thought of you being uncomfortable.” She sighs.

Knox Kingston makes me feel a lot of things… I’m not sure uncomfortable is one of them.

“We probably won’t even see each other that much. He works a lot, and so do I.”

“Are you saying that for my benefit or for yours?” she asks.

“Honestly? I don’t know.”

“Do you promise if it gets to be too much, you’ll come stay with us? Eleana would be thrilled to have you stay.”

I smile, thinking about Becca’s precious daughter. She’s so much fun to spend time with.

“I promise. Look, I have to go. I need to finish packing and get out of here, before they have to physically remove me from the place.”

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

I hang up the phone and finish shoving things into my bags. I know this isn’t a good idea, but what other choice do I have?

Thirty minutes later, I’m pulling up to the Kingston house and I want to throw up when I see that Knox’s car is the only one in the driveway.

So much for hardly seeing each other.

I park my car next to his, popping the trunk and heading around to grab a couple of my bags. This whole situation has ‘bad idea’ written all over it, but it might be a good thing for Kinsley.

I push the door open when no one answers my knock.

“Hello?” I call out––the house is quiet.

I’m honestly not sure where I’ll be sleeping so I just leave my stuff in the hallway and head back outside to grab the last of my bags.

When I step back inside, my bags are gone.

“Hello?” I call out again.

“I’m up here,” I hear Knox’s gruff voice from upstairs.

The thought of being alone with him after what’s happened over the last couple of days has me on edge. I head upstairs, heading down the hallway to where the guest room is.

“Thanks,” I say awkwardly when I step inside the room.

The Kingston house has always been so grand. This is a guest room and it’s one of the nicest rooms I’ve ever seen. The walls are painted a deep blue, gold curtains hang over the window, and the bed and furniture are a white oak color.

“This is beautiful,” I say, looking around the room.

“Let me know if you need anything.” He grunts before pushing past me, practically running from the room.
