“I leave that to my dad. I try to avoid places like that if I can,” I admit.

“I get that,” she says.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Sophia’s parents, but from her comment, it sounds like they are still the same uptight people they were before.

The hostess seats us once we get inside, and I ask for a table outside. If you come to Shark’s you have to make sure you have the full experience.

“What an amazing view,” Sophia gushes, and the smile on her face is breathtaking.

“It really is.”

We both order and the conversation flows easily. It’s odd to actually have a civilized conversation with her, and not yell and fight.

“How’s work?” I ask her between bites.

“I love it there.”

“Is that what you did back in Chicago?” I ask, and I don’t miss the way her body stiffens at the mention of Chicago.

“No. I didn’t work when I lived there. I went to school, but that’s it,” she says, her eyes drifting out to the water.

Her body is saying so much, and she’s saying so little. We’re walking on eggshells as it is, so I’m not going to push her.

“How’s work for you?” she asks, changing the subject.

Work is a sore subject for me.

“I love everything about working at the University,” I tell her.

“But…” She trails off, taking a drink of her beer.

“But I hate the firm. That’s where my dad wants me to end up, but I would do anything for that not to happen.”

“I had no idea you felt that way. What do you want to do at the University?” she asks, and for once someone seems genuinely interested in something in my life.

“I want to be a professor. I’ve taken all the necessary classes. I took them while I was going through law school, like my dad wanted me to. That’s why I’ve never had a life.”

She puts her beer down, staring at me like she’s seeing me in a new light.

“I’m ashamed that I didn’t know any of this about you. I feel like I’ve had everything wrong.”

“Most people do, but I don’t correct them.”

“Why is that?” she asks.

“Because I don’t care to,” I say honestly.

“Fair enough,” she says as the waitress brings us our check.

After I pay, we walk outside. I’m dying to grab her hand, but I’m not sure we’re there yet. It still feels like we’re walking on eggshells, worried when the next bomb is going to drop between us.

It feels like something’s changed between us tonight, though.

Chapter 10

Sophia

Who knew that Knox Kingston had so many layers? I had no idea about the things he’s been going through with his father. I always assumed that he loved the work he was doing. It sounds like I couldn’t be more far off.
