“Hey, babe,” I say, smiling at her, not missing the shocked look on my siblings faces.

Sophia walks over, taking a seat on my lap, leaning into my body.

“When did this happen?” Kai asks, gesturing between us.

“A lot later than it should have,” Sophia says, taking the words from my mouth.

“I’ve never been so excited in my life,” Kinsley says, her eyes lighting up.

“I hate to say I told you so, but…” Kane trails off, making us laugh.

“So, the two of you are serious?” Kinsley asks, her eyes begging me to say yes.

“Well, considering I love her, I’d say yes,” I say, kissing her on the cheek.

“OH MY GOD! This is the best news ever,” Kinsley says, flying from her chair, wrapping her arms around the both of us.

“Is now a good time to tell you all that I bought a ring for Noelle?” Kane asks.

“No shit? I bought one for Ivy too.” Kai laughs.

“Don’t steal my thunder, man,” Kane groans.

“There is way too much good news being thrown at me at once,” Kinsley says, making all of us laugh.

“Should we have a dinner party to celebrate?” Kai asks.

“No!” the rest of us reply in unison.

The next morning,I wake up with a plan in place. Preston didn’t come by last night, but he called and said he got held up. He’s planning to come by this afternoon, so everything I need to deal with involving my father needs to be resolved this morning.

I look over at Sophia wrapped up in the blankets in my bed and can’t help but smile. We still have a long way to go, but it feels good to be on this path with her.

“I can feel you staring, you know?” She laughs, muffled by her pillow.

“I can’t help myself,” I tell her.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you today?” she asks, leaning up, propping her head on her hand.

“No, this is something I’ve needed to do for a long time. It’s also something I need to do alone,” I tell her.

“I’m worried about you,” she says, frowning.

“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine,” I reassure her, leaning over to kiss her.

I roll over, climbing out of bed, grabbing some clothes from the closet.

“I don’t plan for this to take long. Once we have a conversation with Preston later, we’ll put this all behind us, and then I’m going to take you on another date,” I promise.

“I can’t wait,” she says.

“Kinsley has classes all day today, feel free to make yourself at home and I’ll be back in the next couple of hours,” I say, pulling her in for another kiss.

You ever get the feeling that maybe you’re making a big mistake? Like something terrible is on the horizon? I have this sinking feeling in my stomach as I leave the house.

Shaking it off, blaming it on nerves, I pull out of the driveway.
