“I’m changing the locks,” I say, making both Sophia and Kane laugh.

“Please come eat. I made way too much,” Sophia says, gesturing towards the table of food.

“If you insist,” he says, grabbing a chair next to me. “Wait, you didn’t fuck on the table, did you?”

I try not to glare at him, but he’s seriously ruining my vibe.

“Knox,” Sophia warns, kicking me under the table.

She must sense my irritation with my brother right now.

“So, what’s new?” Kane asks, between bites.

“Tell him your news,” Sophia says, taking a drink.

“I’m going to be teaching at the University,” I tell him.

He stops mid bite, looking at me shocked.

“Dude, that’s awesome,” he says, genuinely happy for me.

“Thanks,” I say, uncomfortable with the attention.

“I’m going to build a house,” Kane says.

“You’re what?”

“I want to build a home for me, Noelle, and Braxton. I think it’s time. There’s a plot of land a few miles down the road that would be perfect. I’m ready to take the next step,” he says.

I’m not going to lie; Kane has always been the sibling I’ve been the most worried about. He’s always been so easygoing. He never seemed to take anything seriously. He has grown so much this year.

“I think that’s an amazing idea,” I tell him, holding my glass up towards him.

“Thanks.”

I glance over at Sophia, who has tears in her eyes.

“Are you okay?” I ask.

“I’m just so happy for everyone,” she says, clapping her hands together.

“Is this like a female thing or something?” I turn to ask Kane.

“Why are you asking me that?”

“Oh, shut up,” Sophia says, laughing, throwing a napkin at me.

“I told you tears make me uncomfortable,” I say, shrugging.

“He’s not lying. I remember the first time Kinsley came home crying about a boy. I thought Knox was going to crawl out of his skin,” Kane says, laughing.

“Laugh it up. What good were you?” I ask. “You told her to get over it and went back to playing your video game.”

“What? That’s great advice,” Kane says.

“Poor Kinsley,” Sophia says, laughing.

The rest of the evening is actually pretty nice. My brother sticks around for a while, and he even helps clean up before he leaves. Noelle has really taught him some things.
