“Can you believe we’re finally seniors?” Cam asks when I get into the car.

“We’ve been waiting for this day for so long,” I say, buckling my seatbelt.

“Sorry I’ve been MIA the past few days. There's been so much shit happening at home,” Cam says, sighing.

“What do you mean? What’s wrong?” I look over at her as she furrows her brow.

“It’s Cole,” she says, looking in the rearview mirror before switching lanes.

I try to ignore the feeling in my stomach at the mention of his name.

“Is he okay?” I ask.

“Oh, yeah. He’s fine. He’s just giving my parents so much shit right now,” she says.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, he can’t get his act together. It’s about to give my dad a heart attack. We all assumed he decided to go back to school, because that’s what he told us he was doing. The school called the house at the beginning of the week and asked if he planned on attending this year. Apparently, he hasn’t been showing up for a while. He finally showed up at the house yesterday and all hell broke loose.”

My stomach drops at the thought of Cole being in town. This was supposed to be my year. I wasn’t supposed to have to worry about him anymore. I thought he was gone for good.

“Anyway, he says school isn’t for him. He told my dad he doesn’t give a shit what he thinks and he’s not a parent anyway. My mom was crying. It was a fucking disaster,” she says, pulling into the parking lot.

“So, what’s going to happen?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Not sure. Cole left after that. I tried calling him, but he won’t answer any of our calls. I even called Tyler, but he won’t answer either. I’m hoping that means he’s with him.” I watch her open the car door, leaning inside and grabbing her backpack.

“I’m sorry, Cam,” I say, grabbing my bag.

“It’s totally fine. Enough about that. This is our year to shine. Let’s not bring the mood down with family drama.”

I watch her put her backpack over her shoulders before walking over to lock arms with me.

“You’re right. It’s a big year for the both of us,” I say, smiling over at her.

“Finally fucking seniors!” she says, throwing a fist in the air.

“You’re too much.” I laugh, shaking my head.

I don’t miss the stares as we walk down the hallway. I’d be naive if I said that Cam and I weren’t popular. We’ve pretty much been at the top of the food chain since we started high school. Money and good looks will help with that.

Cam lives for it. I don’t. I hate the extra attention. It’s just something I’ve come to terms with.

“It’s going to be so hard to find a hookup this year,” Cam whines, shoving some books in her locker.

“I swear, that’s all you ever worry about.”

“This is the year you need to loosen up. Get out there and do things you wouldn’t normally do,” she says, looking at me, raising her eyebrows.

If only she knew the trouble I was capable of getting myself into.

“Wanna come over after school?” she asks.

It’s an innocent question. One that before our trip to Mexico would have been a no brainer for me. Now I’m hesitating. Worrying about running into Cole.

“I actually can’t today. My parents are supposed to be home sometime shortly after school gets out,” I lie.

“I get it. My parents have been bugging the shit out of me this week. They’re leaving tonight, so it’s probably best you wait to come hang out anyway. There’s no telling what kind of drama awaits me when I get home.” She sighs, slamming the locker shut.
