“Everything will work out,” I say, putting a hand on her shoulder.

“Let’s go make this day our bitch,” she says, ignoring me, plastering a smile on her face.

The day flies by pretty uneventfully. The first week of school is the least demanding.

I wave at Cam from the porch when she drops me off.

Sticking my key in the door, I nearly jump out of my skin when someone approaches me.

“Princess?” Cole’s deep voice is in my ear, immediately sending goosebumps down my arms.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I ask, eyes wide, glancing around the driveway, hoping like hell no one saw him.

“Don’t worry, she’s long gone.”

“How long have you been out here?” I ask.

“Like a half hour. I’ve been waiting for you to get home.”

“Why?”

“We need to talk.”

“I don’t have anything to say to you,” I say, pushing the door open.

He doesn’t even bother asking, just makes his way inside.

“I’m sorry I skipped town on you,” he says, shocking the hell out of me.

“I find that doubtful,” I tell him, sitting my backpack on the floor. “Since when is Cole Garrett sorry about anything?”

“I had shit going on,” he says, ignoring me, running his hand through his hair.

“I don’t care about your shit.”

I do care, but my first mistake would be letting him know that.

“I find that doubtful,” he says, mirroring my words from before. “I know you, princess. You care more than you’ll ever admit.”

“What do you want, Cole?”

“I need a place to stay,” he says.

“So find one,” I say, walking into the kitchen.

“I’m trying to. Are you going to let me stay? I know you’re here alone,” he says, following me.

“There’s not a chance in hell I’ll let you stay here. I’m already in deep enough shit after sleeping with you. Can you imagine what Cam would do if she found out you were staying here? Go stay with one of your friends.” I scoff.

“I’d be easy to find if I stayed with a friend. No one would expect me to be here,” he points out.

“Why are you hiding?” I turn around to face him, unaware that he was already so close to me.

“That’s none of your business. The less you know the better,” he says, looking me up and down.

The way he looks at me makes me feel like my body is on fire. It also muddies my thoughts.

“This is a terrible idea,” I say quietly.
