“It’s not a problem. Can I help you get your stuff moved back to my house?” he asks.

“You were serious about that?” I ask.

“Of course. I’m going to need help with Marley. You’re the person she’d want there,” he insists.

“You seem awfully cool about everything right now, and honestly, it's a little concerning.”

He laughs. “Trust me, I'm not cool about anything. I just want what’s best for my sister. I’ve already lost one, and I don't plan to lose another because I’m stubborn.”

“I get that. For what it’s worth, I’m still sorry,” I tell him, grabbing the door handle.

Thankfully, he was willing to give me a ride back to my car. I’m hoping I’ll be able to find my phone.

“I know you are.”

I give him a small wave, watching him drive away, before I head over towards the scene of the accident. They’ve already towed her car, but you can definitely tell something happened here. The tire marks on the road and the damage to the tree are the biggest indications.

I’m wandering around near the tree when I see a car coming down the road, slowing as they approach. I quickly duck behind the tree, when the car pulls to a stop.

“The car is gone, sir,” someone says when they get out of the vehicle.

“Any word on whether or not she made it?” That voice belongs to Riley’s father.

I fucking knew he was behind this.

“No. I came back as quickly as I could, but the ambulance and cop cars had everything blocked off. There was no way to tell.”

“I need you to go to the nearest hospital and see what information you can get. I don't care if you have to lie and pretend she’s your daughter. Do it. And if she’s alive, take care of the fucking problem. We’ll make our move on her brother next,” he orders.

My blood runs cold. This motherfucker. I only have a couple of options here, I can take him out now, or I can try to get to the hospital first. Both are risky.

I decide the latter will keep me out of jail, and if I’m going to jail for something, it’s going to be what I plan to do to Riley’s father before this is all said and done.

I take off towards my car, peeling out as quickly as possible, making my way back towards the hospital.

When I arrive, they’re hesitant to let me in the room, but after a lot of begging, paired with the fact that I’m pretty sure this nurse feels sorry for me, I’m on my way back to the room.

I peek my head inside and see Marley sleeping peacefully. I walk inside quietly, picking up the phone in the room, dialing Mitch’s number.

When he picks up, I explain everything I overheard, and he agrees to go get a phone taken care of. He also assures me that he will be extra cautious and stay in a hotel room instead of his house tonight.

Once I’m off the phone, a nurse peeks her head inside.

‘Hey,” I say.

“There’s a man out here claiming to be her father. Would he be visiting this late?”

My heart drops to my stomach.

“No, he wouldn’t. He doesn’t even know she was in an accident.”

“Should I call the police?” she asks.

Thankfully, this nurse believed me when I told her a vague summary of what was going on.

“No, just tell him no visitors this late. If he causes a scene, then I’d call the police,” I tell her.

She nods in response, before leaving the room.
