The voices sound closer, so I hurry into my room, closing the door behind me. I wonder what that was all about? She’ll tell her father what? It sounded like she was threatening him. Delaney was right, he’s definitely hiding something.

Good thing it’s not my business. It’s almost June, and I’ll be out of this place come August. I need to make it a point to not get myself wrapped up in other people’s business.

* * *

We’ve been home from the beach for a total of two hours, and everyone has already disappeared. It didn’t take me long to figure out that Mitch and Clark try to stay away from the house as much as possible if they think there’s a chance Spencer will be coming around.

I don’t appreciate that neither one of them warned me, and now I’m standing in the living room awkwardly staring at him.

“It’s good to have you back home, Marley,” he says, and I have to force myself not to roll my eyes. “Your mother tells me you’ve enrolled in King University. Let’s hope you last longer than your brother did,” he says.

I close my eyes, biting my tongue. The last thing I want to do is argue with him. I’m trying to keep the peace, so my stay here is as uneventful as possible.

“What will you be studying?” he asks, eyeing me.

“I’m not sure yet. I’m still deciding,” I tell him.

He clicks his tongue, raising his eyebrows.

“Such a shame that neither of my kids have any intention of taking over the family business,” he responds.

“As if you’d let a daughter take over your business,” I retort.

I watch him cross his arms over his chest, giving me a disapproving look. It’s one I’m used to.

“Are we done here?” I ask, before he can drag this out any longer.

“I see boarding school didn’t teach you any manners.”

“I think that’s the job of your parents. Not school,” I say, before turning on my heels and walking out of the room.

“Fucking prick,” I mutter, slamming my bedroom door behind me.

“Is that anyway to talk about me when I’m not around?” Clark says.

I jump back, hand on my chest. He’s perched in my vanity chair, smirking at me.

“Go away, Clark. I’m not in the mood,” I tell him, opening the door again, waving for him to leave.

“What was that all about?” he asks, completely ignoring my request.

“It was Spencer,” I tell him, not really elaborating.

“What did he do?” he asks, standing up, walking towards me.

I dodge him, walking around him to the side of the room he just left.

I watch him lean against my dresser, next to the bedroom door, his signature smirk on his face.

“What didn’t he do? He’s a fucking asshole.” I sigh, flopping down on the chair he was just occupying.

He raises his eyebrows, crossing his arms over his chest, waiting on me to continue.

“He disapproves of any decision I make that isn’t one he made for me. That led to the usual annoyance that neither of his children are going to take over his business.”

“As if he’d let you take over the business anyway,” Clark says, repeating my same words from earlier.

“That’s what I said.”
