“Yeah, I’m fine,” I tell her, shaking the image of pulling over on the side of the road to fuck her from my mind.

“You got everything you need?” I ask her.

“Yes.” She climbs into the truck.

When I close the door of the truck, I’m completely surrounded by the smell of peaches.

We’re about twenty minutes into the drive, when she puts her feet up on my dash, singing along to the music on the radio. Her dress is sliding up, exposing her bare thighs.

Fuck me.

“I’m sorry about this morning,” she finally says.

“For what?”

“Being a bitch,” she says.

“You weren’t a bitch. I was being an asshole.”

“You were, but I was stupid. It’s not like we’re in a relationship or anything. So we’ve got some sexual chemistry… I mean, we’re grown adults, that’s normal,” she says.

It’s so much more than fucking sexual chemistry.

“That’s it, huh?” I ask, looking over at her.

“That’s all it can be,” she says, looking at me.

“If we were two different people at two different places in our lives, you’d be mine, beauty,” I tell her, turning back to the road.

“It doesn’t do much to think about the what ifs, does it?” she says quietly.

“No, I suppose it doesn’t.”

I don’t look at her, because I don’t want to see her face right now.

We don’t talk the rest of the car ride. There isn’t really anything left to say. We’ve already put ourselves in situations that we can’t talk about.

I pull up to a tiny house that the GPS sent me too and look over at her confused.

“Is this it?” I ask.

“Yeah, isn’t it cute?” she says, smiling, clapping her hands together.

“Is it safe?” I ask, looking around.

The neighborhood seems a little rough. I guess it is a college town.

“Of course. Mitch wouldn’t let me live off campus unless he did a thorough check of the neighborhood,” she says, frowning.

“I mean, I figured, but I wasn’t sure,” I tell her, opening the truck door.

“You two are going to have to let loose of the reins a little,” she mumbles.

I know if I were looking at her, she’d probably be rolling her eyes right now.

“Marley, he only wants to keep you safe,” I tell her.

“Yeah, I know.”
