I haven’t heard from Clark since the night we moved in, but it’s probably for the best. The more distance I can put between us, the better.

“We got invited to a Halloween frat party,” Delaney says, coming into the house, smiling.

“It’s September,” I say, looking at her like she’s crazy.

“Duh, they start them early. Do you know how many parties we’ll probably go to for Halloween? This is just the first one. We need to go costume shopping.”

“I have to dress up?” I scrunch my nose up.

“Of course you have to dress up. Now come on, let’s go shopping.”

“Right now?”

“Yes, because if I don’t make you go right now, you’ll never go. I know how you are,” she says, rolling her eyes, grabbing my wrist to pull me off the couch.

“When is this party?” I ask her, once we’re in the car on the way to the mall.

“Next weekend.”

“They don’t waste any time, do they?” I sigh.

“You should invite Mitch,” Delaney says, glancing over at me.

“You don’t think he’s too old?” I say, laughing.

“I’ve never known your brother to turn down a party,” she says.

“That’s true.”

“How are things with Justin?” she asks, pulling into the parking lot.

A couple days after we got settled in, I called Justin and asked him to meet me for coffee. We’ve been hanging out ever since. Things haven’t gone any further than kissing, but we’ve really hit it off. Delaney and I have both been busy with school and our own lives, we haven’t really had a chance to talk about anything.

“I think he’s my boyfriend,” I admit.

“Wait, what?” she says, her mouth hanging open.

I shrug. “I can’t say for sure, but that’s what it feels like.”

“Did you fuck him?” she asks, reaching into the backseat for her purse.

“Is that all you ever think about?” I ask.

“Of course,” she says, looking at me like I’m crazy.

I don’t respond, because we haven’t had sex. It’s not for his lack of trying. I just haven’t been into it. Every time we get close, all I can fucking think about is Clark. There’s got to be something wrong with me.

Two of the longest hours of my life later, we’ve got matching costumes, and I’ve never seen Delaney so happy in my life.

Once we get home, I shoot Mitch a text, asking if he’d be interested in coming to a frat Halloween party. He makes a joke about being too old but agrees. It makes me feel better knowing he’ll be there. I’ve been missing him so much lately.

My phone rings, and I look down to see Justin’s name lighting up the screen.

“Hey, babe,” he says.

“Hey.”
