Then, he had a nightmarish thought of the saboteurs, the wolves they had battled a few days prior, following her through the park to secluded shadows and ripping his beloved limb from limb.

He had to blink the terrible thought away as she stood from the stool, and he kissed her hands impulsively.

“Stay out of trouble out there,” he teased.

A knowing glimmer flashed through Violet’s eyes, and she kissed his hands back. He had to know that something like that wouldn’t happen in such a crowded, public place. His lion whimpered as she walked away.

“I’ll be back in time, don’t worry.” She winked.

He winked back. He hoped that she wasn’t going to search for the enemy. She could handle herself … he had seen her power in action … but his beast side wanted to protect her by any means necessary.

He shook his head, the thoughts sliding around like a fish bowl.

“The race,” he muttered.

SEVENTEEN

VIOLET

People milled around, shoulder to shoulder. There was noise all around and people laughing and hollering at others. It made her think of a county fair but with ten times the number of individuals.

She was shocked by all the different colors being worn in honor of the driver they hoped to win. Red and yellow were everywhere she looked. And Franco’s number was on over half the shirts.

She couldn’t help but chuckle. Franco had many fans, all eager to see him race and win. She felt giddy for the race to start. She couldn’t wait to hear everyone cheering his name.

She left the track, seeing as she no longer was hearing cars roar, the field of bodies grew louder. People were chanting and singing songs. Electricity skimmed over her body as she moved.

“May the race be fast,” a little boy yelled. “I want to see him win by a long shot. I want to see him speed past all the others and leave them in the dust.”

The father patted his head with a laugh. “I’m sure he will, kiddo.”

Her stomach twisted at the sight, and she wondered if she was going to have that. Standing by the sidelines with children watching Franco race. It suddenly was a wish she didn’t think she could give up.

She thought about their time in the hot tub and the possibility of having children. She could see that being her future. They could have made it possible last night.

She couldn’t help but allow her mind to think about that moment. Franco all to herself, wanting to make her happy and satisfied. The way his gaze looked so full of hunger and how his hands felt against her skin.

Let’s talk about the unbelievable orgasm he gave you. That man was making magic happen.

She shook her head, needing to focus. She was supposed to be looking for the person trying to ruin it for Franco. She needed to find the one responsible.

She walked around, taking everything in. She sniffed as she went, catching no familiar scent. She was hoping her tiger would get a feeling, but nothing was coming.

TVs hung along the walls, and they were going through the racers and their cars. She watched other numbers flash, and then it was Franco.

People screamed and cheered. They jumped up and down, rejoicing. She laughed as she continued.

She passed by a staircase that led up to the stands. She climbed up, looking over the track. She could see Franco still talking to the guys. She smiled at him.

“Who are you cheering for?” a lady next to her asked. She was sitting with two boys, all looking over the railing.

She looked at their shirts, seeing Franco’s face and his number. She suddenly pictured that being her life.

“Number 28,” she said, her fingers loosening on the railing. “Are your boys fans?”

The lady laughed, nodding. “You should see their rooms. They have his face everywhere. I can’t say much. My husband is a huge fan himself.”

She looked down at Franco and then at the group. She wanted to at least give the boys a good memory. “When the race is done, why don’t you come down for a picture?”
