I shook my head. "No. I can't do that. I can't leave here acting like there's something out there that's more important than him. Not when he's finally coming around."

I pulled it together, and after dinner, I drove us home. Once home, Dean headed to his room, telling me he wanted to watch a livestream.

The photo of Betts was searing my brain. I had to go talk to her. "I need to run out and take care of something. Are you all right here?"

"Sure."

"If you want, I can do it another time."

"No. I'm just going to watch this livestream."

With a nod, I left Dean and headed back out to my car. As I drove over to Betts's, my mind was a whirl trying to explain away what the article said. It wasn't like the media never made mistakes. There had been a time the media reported my head coach, Naomi, was dating one of the players, which was wrong.

But in that case, the story hadn't been refuted like it had been in the case of Betts and Mikael. As I thought about it, I couldn’t remember reading anything that the story of Betts and Mikael had been put straight.

When I arrived at Betts's apartment, it took forever for me to find the courage to knock on the door. I was about to get my heart broken, I knew, and yet I needed to confront her.

When she opened the door, her eyes widened in surprise.

"Expecting Mikael?" I all but snarled.

She retracted from me, looking at me with concern and confusion. "What are you talking about?"

I stepped into her apartment as I pulled out my phone and held up the story. "Didn't you know? You're having Mikael's baby."

She studied my phone and then looked up at me and blew out a breath. She knew. She knew, so this had to be true.

“Todd, it’s—”

"First, you tell me you're not dating Mikael and now, are you going to tell me you're not carrying his baby? Jesus Christ, Betts, you're pregnant? You’re letting me fuck you while you're pregnant with somebody else's baby?"

She looked up at me, and it was almost as if she didn't know what to say. "No. None of this is true. How could you believe that?"

"How? Because twice now, the media has pictures with you and Mikael."

She shook her head. "I wasn't with Mikael when that picture was taken."

It occurred to me that she wasn't denying being pregnant.

"Mikael isn't the baby's father."

For a moment, everything inside me went still. If Mikael wasn't the father, did that mean I was?

A knock sounded on the door, and Betts looked at me and then at the door. "Give me a minute." She left me standing in the middle of her living area to answer the door.

"Ready to go look at new places to live?" The voice wasn't Finnish, so not Mikael. But it was definitely male.

I made my way to the door to see who was going to get a new place to live with Betts. The man was familiar but I couldn’t place him. He looked at me and then at Betts.

Betts sighed. "Pete, this is Todd. My boss. Todd, this is Pete."

Two things hit me at once. The first was that she introduced me as her boss, which told me how much of a fool I'd been for falling for her. The second was realizing Pete was the man she'd been with at Naomi and Pierce's wedding. The man who had to be her baby's father.

The world stands still for a moment when it's crumbling, I discovered. But finally, I was able to propel myself forward. "Congratulations," I said as I walked out the door.

I made a beeline for my car and started driving, trying to figure out what the fuck had just happened. How had I so misjudged Betts? How had my heart fallen for a woman who was cheating on the man who was her baby's father?

I was such an idiot.
