His expression didn’t change, and I felt a flare of hope. Noah knew me, better than anyone else, and he still chose to be with me every day. Maybe I wouldn’t ruin us after all.

Before I could gather the words to tell him I thought I might be pregnant, his door flew open and in tumbled my brother.

22

All three of us froze.

Chloe cursed under her breath, breaking the moment and spurring me off the bed. I’d wanted D to know about me and his sister—to know how much I loved her—but not this way. D’s face closed down, and he turned without a word.

Shit. We needed to do damage control. Chloe scrambled after me, and I barely beat her into the hallway.

“D, wait,” I said.

He spun at the entrance to the living room. “What the fuck, Noah?”

I held up one hand, clamping the other on Chloe to keep her behind me. “It’s not what it looks like.”

His jaw ticked. “It looks like you had my sister in your bed, half-naked.”

She popped her head around my shoulder. “Alright so that partiswhat it looks like, but you need to calm your ass down.”

I squeezed her hip, hoping she’d get the message and stay quiet for once. “I’m not fucking around with her.”

D whipped out an arm in her direction. “Is she fucking around with you?”

An angry noise behind me gave me half a second of warning before Chloe came out swinging. I caught her around the waist as she lunged for D’s face.

“You sanctimonious ass. Noah is one of your best friends, and you’re giving him shit? He treats me with respect and care and actually listens when I talk.”

D glared right back. “I’m not mad at Noah, I’m mad at you.”

“I’m a grown ass adult who can make my own choices, and I choose Noah. Deal with it.”

At Chloe’s shout, Mac’s door opened, and Eva’s head popped out, her hair wild. Her gaze flitted over Chloe’s bra and my naked chest, then stopped on D’s flushed face. For once, she chose to stay out of the situation and simply leaned against the doorframe.

D threw his hands in the air and paced away. “Deal with it? I spentall afternoonwith you, and nothing. You lied to my face. What did I do to deserve that? Why didn’t you trust me?”

I rubbed my chest where his words sliced open a wound. He was right—we should have trusted him. Still, Chloe looked like he’d slapped her, face pale and drawn, and I wouldn’t let her take the brunt of his anger.

My chin went up. “It was my idea.”

Chloe’s head swiveled toward me, and I met her eyes.

“We wanted to see how things went before we told everyone,” I continued.

D snorted. “By everyone, you mean me, specifically. No way you kept it a secret from Eva and the others.” His nose flared, and he leveled Chloe with a hurt look. “I expected better from you.”

Chloe clutched her stomach, and I wondered if the stress of the situation was making her feel sick again. It would serve D right if she puked on him since he still hadn’t learned to respect the privacy of someone’s bedroom.

D studied my arm around Chloe for a long moment, then pressed his lips together and walked away. Chloe tried to pull free so she could chase after him, but I didn’t release her.

“No, I’ll go,” I said. “He and I need to get a few things clear. Eva?”

She straightened from her silent perch to pull Chloe away from me with an arm around her shoulders. “Yep. I’ve got her. Come on, Chloe. You look like you need to sit down, and maybe we should find your top.”

Chloe shrugged off Eva’s arm. “I’m not an invalid.” She glanced back at me. “We still need to talk.”

Despite her ominous tone, a smile tried to escape. Whatever trouble she’d gotten into, I was there for it. “Do you need me right now?” If she said yes, I’d stay. No questions asked. D was like a brother to me, but his sister was everything.
