IKE, AKA REACHING FOR A NEW FUTURE

On another brutallyhot late summer day, I arrive at the Rawkfist clubhouse—The Rock Tavern—with Pa-Donovan, King Peepaw, Uncle Court, Uncle Emmett, West, and Val. While my father heads inside with the older men, I hang outside with my cousins. The entire club is expected to show up for this meeting.

“Do you think Anouk would marry Val?” West asks me. “She said she doesn’t want a husband, and he won’t be able to do that celibate-sex-god thing. This way, our ma will stop worrying about him.”

Val glances at his brother, seeming confused. “I’ve always fully supported your life decisions. Like, when you got hung up on your Toomey dream girl. And the time you fell in love with a clown. Also, when you decided to get hitched with a ginger.”

West exhales hard like an angry bull. “Those were all the same things.”

“Still counts,” Val says and crosses his arms. “I’m supportive. Now, give what you got, and support my decision to be a celibate sex god.”

“What does that even mean?” I ask Val.

“It means as my brother, he should have my back.”

“No, the ‘celibate sex god’ part.”

“Well, the woman I want is a frigid slut, so I figure that means I get to be a celibate sex god.”

West stops wiping his sweaty forehead long enough to snort. “Struck out, huh?”

“Yeah,” Val says and sighs deeply. “How could a woman not want all this?”

While my cousin shows off his body, even twisting around to gesture at his ass, I notice the rest of the club arriving.

“Be patient and wait for your moment,” I tell Val when he stops basking in his own male beauty. “I lost nearly a year with my dream girl. When I got my second chance, I fully embraced the moment.”

“Thanks, man,” Val says as his blue eyes sparkle with warmth. “It’s nice to get a little support after West treated me so badly.”

West narrows his blue eyes at me, spewing drama in my direction. Ducking his snarly gaze, I walk inside the old tavern with floor to ceiling mahogany paneling. This is the most masculine location I’ve ever been inside. The tavern always gets me in the mood to fuck and fight. Instead, I need to sit still while the meeting begins.

Uncle Court stands at the front of the room. I’ve noticed how he always seems a little down after his kids return to their other homes. Today, I spot a little more gray around his temples. Yet, when he speaks, there’s no doubt he can still kick our asses if necessary.

“Duke McGraw was in the hospital over the weekend.”

“I’m sad,” Val announces. “This information makes me feel sad.”
