Once I find a good route with a small ledge near the bottom, I hoist myself out of the water. I sit on the ledge for a few minutes watching the surrounding water for boats. When nothing appears, and the sound of the police begins to fade, I prepare for the climb. I begin to tear off strips of fabric from the bottom of my dress. Once I have four good strips, I wrap them around my hands and feet in order to protect my skin from the sharp edges of the cliffs.

Slowly, I make my ascent, not wanting to attract any attention. By the time I make it to the top, my feet are sliced up and my hands raw, but I made it.

I pull myself over the edge, and my body collapses the second I make it to the tree line. I lay there, trying to catch my breath as the exhaustion pulls at my limbs.

The snap of a twig has me bolting up instantly.

“Fancy seeing you here, Tesoro.” The chief of police says in greeting. My eyes roll so hard that it almost gives me a headache. I killed one asshole only to run into another.

Giannini has been in my uncle's pocket for years. It’s the only reason the worthless bastard got his title as chief in the first place. He’s a heavy-set man with a mustache that always seems to have food stuck in it. While he is a great resource when it comes to covering and cleaning up our messes, as a human he is definitely on my hit list.

“What do you want, G?” I ask, too sore and tired to play whatever game he’s spinning.

“Well, we are currently looking for a girl, who was seen at a checkpoint covered in blood. She was also driving what is presumed to be a stolen car.” He pauses and gives me a devilish grin before continuing. “Would you know anything about that?”

“Cut the bullshit, G,” I snap at him, getting to my feet. “How much to make this go away? I’m already in a bad mood, and I definitely don’t need a dose of corrupt cop to add to my day.”

Dropping his casually playful posture, he bares his teeth at me. “You better learn some respect, little girl, or one day you might not be so lucky to get away with what you do.”

I put my hands up in the air in mock surrender. “It’s been a long night. Tell me the cost, and I’ll have the money sent to you,” I say walking up to him. We are almost the same height, and I visibly cringe when a wicked grin spreads across his face.

“You can pay me for this one on your knees, Tesoro,” he says, flashing his yellow teeth.

“I would rather jump off this cliff,” I retort, assuming he’s joking.

“That’s your option tonight for your disrespect,” he says. “Do it, and I won’t alert the team on the beach to your location. Refuse me, and I’ll not only arrest you right now, but I’ll be sure that your fingerprints come up as a match for at least a dozen other murders. There will be no way for anyone to save you then.”

My face pales, bile rising in my throat. I look down at the beach and know I couldn't outrun his men. There's no place for me to go.

I can’t kill him. My blade fell in the water and putting up a fight would alert the men on the beach to our location.

He is looking at me with hungry eyes and it takes everything in me not to vomit. “You know what I do for a living, G. You know who I am. If you make me do this, you’ll be put on a list there is no coming back from.”

The fucker just shrugs as he begins unbuckling his belt and says, “Death would be worth it to see your smart mouth too full of me to talk.”

The glare I level him with has fear rising in his eyes as I sink to my knees. “There are some things that are worse than death. Remember that.”

Chapter 5

Not to brag on myself or anything, but I’ve planned the greatest getaway known to mankind.

I flew our private jet to New York, where we then caught a ferry to Governors Island. Lev hacked the security in the mansion with his contact here, and we were able to walk right in. Governors Island has very few people on it in the evenings, and the port leads directly to the shipping containers we’re taking the cars to.

It was like the Governor put his cars here just so we could steal them.

As we walk into the garage, I already know which car I’m taking. The electric blue Fenyr Supersport with the custom white and blue interior. I grab the keys from the rack and begin to admire just how shiny my new toy is. I slide into the softest leather seats money can buy as I switch on the ignition. The most beautiful sound purrs in my ears as I rev the engine, and it’s just my luck that the tank is full.

Who keeps a car they don’t drive full of gas?

Lev claims the Rolls Royce Ghost, decked out in white chrome finishes and white leather interior. I thought for sure he would pick the single-seat Ferrari Monza SP1 since he isn’t big on company, but as much as I think I know him, he still continues to surprise me.

Alexi grabs the Aston Martin V8 in matte black, outfitted with custom racing seats and red interior. It looks like a real-life Batmobile, which is perfect for our dark knight, dressed in his all-black 3-piece suit.

“Alright team,” I begin over our earpieces, “once we open the garage door, the alarm will go off. Lev will try to loop the feed to make it look like nothing is happening as if it’s a false alarm. But we need to be prepared, just in case someone follows us. It’s 0.8 miles to the port, and the ferry is waiting to push off the second we drive the cars on. Everyone ready?” They both nod in acknowledgment, and I raise the garage door. Lev gets to work as I watch through the windows as his fingers do their magic.

“All clear,” he says.

We pull out quickly and race to the port with me in the lead. No one stops us on the way to the ferry, and we board without an issue. It takes twelve minutes for the ferry to get across the bank at max speed. When we are only two minutes from the port, sirens sound in the background.
