“Huh.”
“I’m thorough in my sightseeing.”
When I said nothing, she spun in a circle, holding her arms out.
“I’m okay, see?”
I cracked open her file and read through it. Apart from taking her vitals, the nurse hadn't noted what she was in for. "Look, Ava. You don't have to worry." I shut the file and faced her. "What happened between us won't get in the way of me giving you the best care as your doctor.”
Hell, it probably made me want to look out for her more. The urge I felt to care for her that first night we met surfaced again. I wanted to fix all her concerns, so she didn't look so pale and worried.
I left that part out, though. I didn’t want to scare her off.
“You’re safe here.”
She took a step away from me. “I’m— I can’t. You just have to promise me one thing.”
My eyes narrowed, but I nodded.
“You won’t tell my dad, alright? You won’t tell him I was here.”
“Why would I even—”
She closed the space between us, staring into my eyes. “Just promise me you won’t tell him.”
“Okay, okay. I won’t.” The worry in her brown eyes tightened my insides. “Look, even if you didn’t ask, doctor-patient confidentiality would require I keep this visit private. No one outside these walls will hear of it. Is that what worries you? You can just sit down, and we'll—"
“I’m fine. That’s all.” She spun and rushed out of the exam room.
I peeked into the file again, like it held the answer. But there was nothing.
“Don’t tell him.”
I looked up. Ava had poked her head back into the room.
“Please.”
“I promise.”
Her face calmed somewhat, and she disappeared.
I doubted she’d be back.
As she so adamantly insisted, she was fine.
Hopefully, she really was and didn’t need medical attention.
Or was she too embarrassed to let me attend to her?

Ava
The sky above was a mix of burnt orange and reds with the sun’s setting. Any other day, I’d be thrilled to stare in awe.
Now, I beelined for Linea’s door and knocked, leaving the pretty sky behind.
“I’m coming,” she grumbled.
