“We also need to get there in one piece,” I grumble and fasten the seatbelt, not wanting to take a chance on Arsenio’s driving. I really don’t need to be going through the windshield today.

“I’m a pro,” he scoffs, but also does his seatbelt too, apparently not as confident in his skills. He grimaces as I give him a pointed look. “It’s the other people I’m worried about.”

“Sure.”

The engine rumbles as Arsenio speeds down the road, silence stretching between us as I try to wrap my mind around everything that’s just happened.

“It’s looking like we’re finally going to get some proof that Monte guy killed her father,” Arsenio says, stroking a hand over his beard as his eyes flash with the violent flames of malice.

“Looks like,” I growl, unable to voice all the thoughts running through my mind right now as my hands clench into fists, wishing I could choke the air from Monte’s lungs for her.

I’m right there along with Arsenio. I want to tear the guy’s head off and make him pay for everything he’s put my mate through, but she’d kill me if I took this from her. She needs to claim her own vengeance—she needs to be the one who rips his throat out, feels the finality of his last shaky breath with his blood coating her tongue, and I’ll be there to watch.

“I just hope we can find them before he does anything to her beta,” Arsenio says, anxious energy rippling from him in waves.

“This is torture,” I grumble, and Arsenio echoes his agreement by stepping on the gas, propelling us even faster.

I swear his foot must be on the floor.

I feel useless right now and completely out of the loop. Aside from the few texts we’ve gotten from Zeke, we don’t know much. Jealousy flickers in my chest for a moment that he’s the one with her, that he gets to see proof first, but I quickly quash that thought, instead grateful that she at least has one of us there with her.

I curse the stop sign as we roll to a halt, and Arsenio quickly checks, spotting a van to the right, but they’re not close yet. My teeth grit as I look down at the GPS, mentally doing a calculation. We aren’t far, so with the speed we’re going—

“Fuck,” Arsenio shouts as he floors it, jolting the car forward. My gaze snaps back to the road as the car lurches, but we’re not quick enough. The black van to the right shows no signs of stopping or slowing as it barrels towards us. Time seems to pass in slow motion, my mind capturing each moment in excruciating detail as my heart jackhammers away. We’re so close to the other side of the road, so close to safety, but it’s not enough. Arsenio manages to get us out of a direct hit to the front, but it’s not enough to miss entirely as the van slams into the rear end. Metal crunches under the impact, alarms blaring as our van spins, the force so great it completely turns us in the other direction.

My head smashes the side airbag, agony exploding through my skull as I desperately cling to consciousness and fight away the fog that threatens to pull me under. I scrabble for the Glock at my waist and pull it free, giving myself one final second to prepare for the onslaught that is about to come our way.

“Arsenio,” I shout, taking stock of my pack brother, but he isn’t as lucky.

His forehead rests on the front airbag, blood trickling down from his temple as he blinks, clearly still disoriented.

“Everett,” he groans groggily as he attempts to sit up.

“Get down,” I hiss as shots erupt beside us. I need to take these fuckers out before it’s too late. “Call Silas.”

We both duck as shots ring off the crumpled metal at the back, and I claw my phone out of my pocket, hurriedly finding Silas’ contact and shoving it towards Arsenio.

“Wait,” he says weakly, but I don’t bother as I grip the door handle. There’s no way I’m letting him help, not like this.

Adrenaline pumps through my veins, preparing me for this fight as I open the door. I go to get out, but something tugs me back.

My seatbelt.

I reach back to unclip it, but the squeal of tires on asphalt causes me to pause. Another black van barrels towards us, its headlights blaring in our direction, showing no signs of stopping.

“Brace yourself,” I shout just as I get the door closed. The second van slams into us, my door crunching and the force of the impact throwing my body like a ragdoll. My head hits off something, my eyes too blurry to make it out as consciousness quickly slips away, the groan of metal on metal the only sound that pierces through the din.

Skylar. Her name echoes in my mind, my wolf furious and ready to tear the world apart to find her despite our dwindling strength as the world turns black and darkness swallows us whole.

Cooloceanwavessplashacross my face, the water relaxing me as I drift over the current, floating in the afternoon sun. A cool breeze sweeps over me as someone calls my name in the distance.

Everett.

Everett.

Skylar?

I look up at my glorious mate standing on the beach, the sunlight shining down on her like she’s the beacon to my salvation.
