“Right,” I murmur, closing my email and pulling up Jasper’s contact.

My finger hesitates over the number, just about to press down when the squeal of tires pierces my ears.

“Fuck,” Zeke exclaims and shoves the keys in the ignition, but we’re too late.

“Get the fuck out,” a man shouts through the pane of glass, the barrel of his gun aimed straight at me.

My heart jolts, and I press the call button before dropping the phone and watching it clatter between the seat and the center console. I just hope Jasper picks up in time to at least hear us if we don’t get out of this.

I glance at Zeke, signaling for him to go, but as he turns the ignition, the man’s words snap my attention back to him.

“Don’t even think about it unless you want my friend to blow your beta’s brains out.”

Zeke and I both freeze, and my skin turns numb like a cold frost spreading over it as I turn to face him. He holds a phone up in the other hand, his gun still trained at us through the window. A live stream plays of a dark, damp cement room. It takes a moment for my eyes to adjust through the tint of the window, but pain slices through my chest the moment it does.

Rage boils up in me and I have to fight it down, reminding myself of the man’s threat as I watch Isabella’s crumpled form on the floor. She’s naked, her body curled up into a ball, exposed and helpless. Dark red glistens in the light cast by a single lightbulb hanging down from the ceiling by a wire. A man stands before her, his gun trained on her with a phone pressed to his ear.

I’d almost think she was already dead if it wasn’t for the slight tremor of her body as she shivers in the damp room.

They couldn’t even give her something to cover herself with. They’re fucking dead.

“Come with us, or I tell my friend to put a bullet in her head,” the man repeats, tapping the barrel of his gun against the glass as more cars surround us, trapping us in.

We could go, or we could fight. Both are options we’ve taken before, but I can’t risk it.

Isabella might be dead by the time we get there, but I have to try to get her out. I have to try to save her.

It’s my fault she’s in this position to begin with.

I made a promise I wouldn’t lose another member of my pack, and I sure as hell am not going to let that happen if I have a chance to stop it.

I can’t even tell the others that we’re too late, that they already have her, and us now too.

I send a reassuring pulse through the bond, silently communicating that we’ll get out of this, that we’ll get all of us out safely. Zeke dips his head in a nearly imperceptible nod, and we lift our hands as one as they breach the doors and roughly throw us to the ground in one swift movement. My knees hit the ground first, stabbing pain radiating up them. I barely brace myself in time, my face inches away from smashing into the ground as dirt kicks up from the impact, coating my tongue and clogging my airway. A hacking cough racks my chest as I try to clear my lungs, but the sound only earns me a swift kick to the side, sending stabbing pain through my ribs.

Gritting my teeth, I refuse to make a sound. I refuse to let them have the satisfaction of making me cry out in pain. My lack of reaction earns me another kick, and another, before rough hands grasp the back of my jacket and haul me up. I struggle to catch myself and pull in a wheezing breath, barely holding back the grunt of agony as I’m pushed forward.

Let them have their fun because once I’m in, once I have my pack, their lives will be mine.

I look at Zeke as they shove him along with me, dirt coating his cheek, and give him a steely look of determination. They have no idea what hell they’ve brought on themselves. If they thought the other night was bad, they have no idea just what I have in store for them now.

They wanted a war, and now they’ve got one.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Everett

“Getateamreadyand meet us there,” I demand as Arsenio hops into the driver’s seat of one of the armored vans. “I’m sending over the location now.”

“Of course, Alpha,” Lucas says, muffled rustling echoes in the background as he must be getting ready. “I’ll have a team prepped and en route within five minutes.”

“Good,” I say as I climb into the passenger side and slam the door behind me. “You stay here and prepare the rest in case they attack here next.”

“I’m on it.”

“Keep me updated.” I disconnect the phone, quickly forwarding the address to Lucas before I shove my phone into my pocket. Arsenio already has the GPS ready to go as we peel out of the compound and onto the open road.

“Zeke said Zayn is on his way by himself, so we need to hurry,” Arsenio says, and I brace myself on the front dash, narrowing a glare on my reckless friend.
