Right?

I wasn’t expecting it when Barimuz’s fist landed in my gut. I was pretty sure something shattered on impact.

“Aww, want me to kiss it better?”

His laugh was like nails on a chalkboard when I slashed out with my claws, aiming for his throat.

Barimuz’s body was like hitting smoke when I connected, and another screech of rage escaped me when he laughed harder at the sound.

We were making a mess of the street. I’ was a little more aware after the twins and Auren pushed through the small crowd that gathered to watch the show.

Seeing the youngest Ambrose made everything hurt twice as bad.

Someone was going to have to tell him what had happened, that we’d all colossally messed up and that our sanctuary was in danger.

It was all my fault. I should have known.

I snapped to attention when Barimuz stepped toward me, but before I could go after him again, Neo was there.

“Aria, stop! He’s goading you to distract you from trying to find Sariel!”

He actually grabbed at me andyanked, making me stumble backward.

Spinning on my heel, I felt myself snarling at him for interfering; his hands were then up in a placating gesture.

My face was wet. It was only at that instant that I realized I was crying, and probably had been for a while.

Another mark against Barimuz.

Mortification built and mingled with my fury, blocking out my attempts to get myself under control.

“You have tocalm down,” Neo insisted.

I lashed out at the other angel immediately. Barimuz cackled when I actually hit him, cracking his nose and earning a curse before fixating back on the demon.

“Bring him to me.Now.”

It was a hiss that made Barimuz sober up immediately.

There’s a long moment of silence where neither of us moved.

He inhaled deeply. “I’ll do you one better, pup.”

I snarled at the pet name, but black smog quickly surrounded us. I didn’t even think thoroughly about it when I attacked him again, thrashing and swinging wildly in the darkness.

It wasn’t enough—it wouldneverbe enough. He needed to hurt like I did for doing this to me. ToSariel.

Oh, Sariel. I’m so sorry.

The thought broke what was left of my composure, and a ragged sob ripped out of me.

Barimuz just laughed.
