Page 59 of Replaced Mate

It’s all instinct—barely any thought was needed for my body to move. I attributed it to my wolf; Aria had said hers didn’t speak like my angel did, and I was starting to understand that a bit better.

Maybe there’s hope for you, after all,my angel lamented.

I could feel my fur bristling at the mocking tone, but my wolf was entirely fixated on Lucifer.

His body was shimmering and flashing, like when a glamor was having trouble staying in place. What lay underneath was almost painful to look at.

Obviously, this whole situation was having him grapple with his own emotions—I’d guess excitement was the primary one—and it’s challenging to keep up his “friendly CEO persona” image.

Barimuz and Aria arrived in a flurry of black smoke and blinding light.

“You dare take my mate?Mine?I’ll fucking kill you, Barimuz!”

Her angel—and it had to be her angel because while my mate was feisty, she wasn’t “rain down heavenly fury” feisty—was hissing at the Archdemon, who was now without my face. I didn’t think she even realized they were no longer at camp.

Seeing her was so overwhelming, I—

My wolf whined, low and long, and when she heard it, her body jerked to attention.

“Sariel.”

The next instant, I was being hugged around my furry neck, and white wings were curling over me; my angel was thrashing in an attempt to get to the forefront, but he was last in line. My tail was wagging, dragging across the stone floors with an audible swish as she pressed kisses to my head.

“I’m sorry.”

Thatwas Aria now, warbling out her apologies through tears. “I should have known. I’m so sorry, Sariel.”

The apologies poured out of her, and they’re like a balm to all those tender and torn bits that had opened up while I was trapped in the cage. It’s enough to soothe my wolf into letting me back out again, and all of a sudden, I was bundling my distressed mate into my arms and squeezing.

“I knew your reunion would be a sight!”

Lucifer clapped, and I glared over her shoulder at him.

Barimuz was standing beside him now, watching the two of us with an odd look on his face. Michael’s words echoed in my head, so I sneered, pulling her tighter.

Barimuz looked away.

“We’ve been having so much fun together, haven’t we, Sariel?” Lucifer crooned.

Aria helped me stand, then snarled. All her righteous fury reignited when our bond clicked back into place.

Hetorturedyou?

Her mental voice was choked. I felt the waves of nausea rolling through her at the thought. It brought me a sick sort of pleasure to know she was upset by it; after so long watching her being happy without me, it was a relief to see that if she had known, she would have come.

But, of course, she would have.

Don’t think about it too much, pup.

Her eyes were glowing when they shot to me, and I tried to force a smile for her. It’s too much; my mate blinked back tears, turning her rage on Lucifer again.

“You’re a liar,” she hissed.

Lucifer’s expression shuttered.

My angel shoved at me again, reminding me that he wanted to be here with our mate. I sighed, then let him.

Taking the backseat in my own body was weird. Not quite as horrifying as the cell, but definitely not comfortable. It was also distinctly different from the wolf because I was still “there,” so to speak. He had run the rage and forced the shift, but I’d been along for the ride, and it was more like co-piloting than surrender.
