My angel did not allow for that. The wings unfurling from my back didn’t even feel heavy when he was in control.

“Aht-at!”

A feminine voice cut us off when Lucifer tensed, hand half-raised, and my angel stiffened.

“Cosette, darling.” Lucifer’s voice was strangled when the dark-haired woman stalked into the throne room, glaring daggers at him. “How lovely to see you again.”

“Don’t give methat. Why do my descendant and her mate keep being dragged here?”

Cosette?Michael’sCosette?

She turned to Aria, and her face softened, taking on an apologetic expression.

I was unnerved by the two’s high resemblance. So was my angel, from the way he gripped at our mate’s hip.

That’s Michael’s mate,I whisper down our bond, relieved to feel it for the first time in weeks.

Aria was polite enough to wait until Cosette turned back to Lucifer in her righteous angel fury before giving me an incredulous look.He has a mate?

Her concern and confusion would’ve made me laugh, but my angel just nodded, ever serious.

“I was helping them to solidify their bond,” Lucifer explained. “The two weren’t ready for intimacy, so an emotional connection was needed to—”

“Oh, youbastard.”

Barimuz coughed to mask his laugh, and Lucifer turned angry eyes on the Archdemon.

“What are you still doing here? Go handle your legion or something. They’ve been a pain in my neck for ages.”

His minion bowed at the waist, giving my mate and I one more lingering look, and then vanished without a word.

I would need to explain that to Aria, I supposed, from the way her rage sparked down our bond. It was mingling with self-loathing and embarrassment, so clearly, now was not the time, but she deserved to know the whole story of how this all had transpired.

“Youforcedtheir bond?” Cosette’s voice was a little less than a screech as she leaned into Lucifer’s personal space, hands fisted at her sides.

“‘Forced’ is a strong word, darling.”

“This is why I never—”

“Cosette, please.”

Michael walked into the room, sighing as his mate fumed and raged against Lucifer on our behalf.

She gave him one more venomous look, then stalked to her mate’s side. “He’s such a—a—”

“Bastard? You said that already,” Lucifer taunted her.

If I had any idea how to make a portal out of Hell, I would have used this distraction to get us out of there.

“Monster! You’re a monster. Their bond was forming at its own pace! You shouldn’t have gone meddling like this,” Cosette argued, and Michael pulled her into his chest, giving Lucifer a deadpan expression that made me wince. I’d never seen a “you’re such an idiot” look quite like that before.

Lucifer, for his part, looked almostheartbroken. He was staring at Cosette with an expression I’d have thought was longing if I didn’t know better.

Aria also seemed to have picked up on the weird dynamics at play because her anger and all the nasty things she wanted to unleash on everyone had gone silent.

“I amsosorry about him,” Cosette turned to us finally, lips pursed. “He wasn’t always like this.”

Lucifer sputtered, obviously offended, as the angel approached us.
