Tyler

‘Hell yeah!’ Tyler bellowed, watching on as his surfer friends Jax and Codie showed off exactly what they could do. ‘All right, all right, all right!’

Tyler was lying down on the warm sand of Lima beach, a mere twenty minute drive from Stallion Valley.

With the sun high in the sky and not a cloud to be seen for fifty miles, Tyler was loving the weather just as much as he was enjoying is time in the surf.

Accept right at that moment, Tyler wasn’t actuallyinthe water.

Having wiped out a little awkwardly on a huge wave a few minutes ago, Tyler was perhaps wisely taking his time to rest up and make sure that his left knee hadn’t gone and injured itself again - after all, he was forty-four years old and injuries didn’t heal as quickly as they did back in the day.

Being a rugged kinda guy, Tyler wasn’t normal the kind of man to pay too much attention to injuries or his safety in general. That just wasn’t the vibe that he and his surfer friends had.

When Tyler and his buddies hit the Lima Beach waves, it was all about pushing things to the limit and seeing who could surf the hardest.

That said though, Tyler knew in this instance that what he really needed to do was take a moment and allow his body at least fifteen minutes to rest and recuperate.

Damn, I want to get back out there.

But… I know it makes sense to wait.

Fuck… I hate missing out on a gnarly wave.

Tyler was at least partially happy to see Jax and Codie having so much fun though. They were great friends to Tyler, and he relished seeing them as often as he could.

Jax and Codie lived over in Rapid Rancher Creek and traveled about half and hour to get to Lima Beach.

Together, the three friends might not have looked like typical surfers with their burly frames - but no one would have any doubt about their surf skills if they watched the three friends surf for just a few minutes.

In fact, the three of them had even surfed competitively for a while when they were in their twenties. However, with Tyler, Jax, and Codie now all being in their forties their days of competing were long behind them.

Well… unless the competition happened to be against themselves…

‘Yo, Jax!’ Codie said, a cocky tone in his voice. ‘I totally owned you on that last wave.’

‘You fucking wish!’ Jax replied. ‘Hey, Tyler… you listening to this crap?’

‘I’m listening,’ Tyler said, allowing the hot sun to hit his bare, muscled torso. ‘But what I’m really thinking is that we need to open these beers. And I’m hoping you two can at least agree to that?’

Tyler didn’t even wait for a response.

Friendly rivalry in the water aside, one thing would always bring the three men together and that was a nice, cold, bottle of beer.

‘Here’s to the ocean,’ Tyler said, taking a cold bottle of beer out of his cool-box and raising it to the sky.

‘Here’s to brothers!’ Jax said, taking a bottle for himself.

‘And here’s to us grumpy old assholes finding a baby girl each some day soon!’ Codie roared, taking his drink and following his toast by gulping down at least half the bottle in one attempt.

The three men laughed and lay down on the soft sand, their surfboards laid out before them.

Tyler, like Jax and Codie, still hadn’t found the girl he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

It wasn’t that Tyler didn’t want to find someone special, it just hadn’t happened for him yet and all he could do was speculate as to why.

Maybe I’m too gruff?

Too scary?
