“Goodness, what happened? Can I help?”

“This is Elizabeth, Lyndsay. She had a fall on the steps out front.”

“You’re the new employee in data; I have your security pass.”

“Can you grab it please, so I can take her upstairs and get her cleaned up before she meets Owen?”

Lyndsay hurried to her desk and swiped something from behind a short barrier. She returned with a pass on a lanyard. When she handed it to me, I noted it had the company logo, my name, and a QR code printed on one side. The lanyard also had the company logo embossed on nylon fabric.

I thanked Lyndsay and Raya who led me to a bank of lifts. “The lift on the far end goes to the executive offices on the twentieth floor. It’s exclusive to those with offices there and needs a special pass to use.”

“Like the owners?”

“Owner. Hudson Jackson is the sole owner of the entire corporation.”

“Is he nice?”

“Everyone who works for him thinks so and he’s off the charts gorgeous.”

“Isn’t he an old man?”

“No, what makes you think that?”

“I just thought someone who owns a corporation must be old.”

Raya laughed. “Trust me; he’s a long way from old. I’d say mid-thirties. He stepped into the role of CEO when his father retired four years ago. Owen is his General Manager and also oversees the data division.”

“I’ll look forward to meeting them.”

“You’ll meet Owen shortly, but it’s doubtful you’ll meet Hudson anytime in the near future. He arrives at work before anyone else and leaves hours after everyone has gone home. He spends all day in his office.”

The lift doors slid open, we stepped inside, and after Raya pushed the button for the third floor, the doors closed, and we sped upwards. When the car stopped and the doors slid open, we stepped out.

Raya pointed to the left. “That’s computer development in that area and we’re off to the right.”

“How many are in data?”

“Fourteen full-time. Sixteen with you and Murphy.”

“Wow, that’s a lot of people punching in numbers.”

“It’s not only numbers; we compile reports too. The corporation is international, but all the processing is done here.”

“Okay. It makes sense that it’s all done where the boss is, I suppose.”

“I’ll take you to the break room, where we have a first aid kit.”

I followed her along a hallway, and we entered a huge room with several tables and chairs, a wall of cupboards with a marble benchtop, a coffee bar, and a large refrigerator.

“We share this room with the computer guys, and it’s kept well-stocked with water, milk, coffee, tea, drinking chocolate, and biscuits.” Raya spoke as she opened a cupboard and pulled out a box with a green cross on the top.

She ordered me to sit, and I parked my butt on a chair. Setting the kit on the table, she flipped the catches and pushed back the lid to reveal a first aid kit bursting with everything that might be required. As she took out bandages, swabs, and creams, I watched.

“How long have your worked here, Raya?”

“Eight years and I wouldn’t work anywhere else.”

That was a good thing to hear. I’d been worried I might find myself with a tyrant boss, but it appeared I’d been worried about nothing.
