I was already in deep, but if Colin was telling the truth, I needed to see what was going on for myself. A nagging at the back of my mind was telling me Colin was vindictive, but would he lie?

“Five minutes, Colin, and if this is nothing, I’ll be reporting your accusation to management.”

I followed Colin to the executive lift, and he swiped the pass to gain access. I had no idea where he’d managed to steal it from, and I wasn’t going there. Once inside the lift, he pressed the card against a panel and the doors closed. We were whisked upwards, and when the lift stopped, the doors opened, and Colin stepped aside allowing me to leave first.

I’d never been on the executive floor before, so I waited for Colin to pass me and followed. He led me along a hall with doors on both sides, but we seemed to be heading for a door at the end. As we approached, I heard voices—Hudson’s and another that was unmistakably female.

Colin reached for the doorknob, but when I heard Hudson speaking again, I set a hand on his arm to stay his movement so I could listen.

“Baby, you know I love you. There is no need to worry about anything.”

I removed my hand and nodded for Colin to open the door.

When he pushed it open, my heart stuttered to a stop. Hudson was hugging a tall woman dressed in an exquisite suit. Her head was against Hudson’s chest and fair hair tumbled down her back to her waist. When he heard the door open, he looked over and our eyes locked.

I’d seen enough to know I’d been deceived. I took off at a run, ignoring Hudson calling my name. The lift was still on the floor, so I jumped inside, ignored Hudson hurrying towards me, and punched the button for the ground floor. I was grateful when it started moving. Hudson had no other way down except the stairs, it was the only lift that came up to the floor.

Tears flooded my eyes and flowed over my cheeks. On the ground floor, I exploded into the lobby and raced for the front door. The security guard unlocked it and I burst into the night. Fortunately, I was able to grab a taxi and directed the driver to take me to Sydney Airport.

While he headed from the city, I texted Harper to let her, and Ellie know I was going home for a while and would be in touch.

Raya was next. I tendered my resignation via text and then blocked her number, not wanting her to try and talk me out of leaving. I wanted nothing to do with Jackson Enterprises or anyone who worked for the betraying arsehole.

I pulled up the airline site and found a flight leaving Sydney in an hour and booked a seat. Then I made a call to the satellite phone at home hoping there would be a decent signal.

“Mathew speaking.”

“Mathew, I need you to come and get me from Darwin airport, please.”

“Lizzy, what’s wrong?” Mathew sounded part concerned, part angry.

I burst into tears, and when he couldn’t make sense of my blubbering, mum came on the line.

“Liz, what’s going on, darling?”

“Oh, Mum, I thought we had a future.”

“Darling, calm down, it will all be okay. Where are you?”

“In a taxi on the way to the airport. My flight leaves at 7.30 and arrives in Darwin around midnight. I know it’s too late to come then, so I’ll wait there until morning.”

“Get a hotel room and go to the airport at nine in the morning. Mathew and Lucas will wait there for you if they arrive earlier.”

“Thanks, Mum.”

“Love you, baby girl. Travel safe and your brothers will see you soon.”

“Love you, Mum. Thank you.”

“Always, darling.”

Chapter Ten

HUDSON

I was seated at my desk working on a report while waiting for Kathy, aka Baby, to arrive. She had called earlier in the afternoon asking for anemergency—read “I need money,”meeting.

Security had been informed of her arrival and asked to escort her up to my office.
