I needed Elizabeth’s address in the top end, and there were a few things that needed to be delegated and rescheduled. I also needed to hire a plane to take me to the lady I now suspected I loved.

My stomach growled loudly, reminding me I hadn’t eaten since lunch the previous day. Glancing at my watch, it showed almost five in the morning, and I flicked off a text to Devon.

I’d worked all night clearingthings that were urgent and sending emails delegating things that couldn’t be left until I returned. I also spent over an hour on the phone with Owen, interrupting his evening with Dolly—it appeared they also had serious feelings for each other. We had synced our computers and I’d taken him through a few things that needed to be managed.

My staff was excellent, and Owen was the perfect person to step into my shoes while I was gone. I had no hesitation about leaving for the week.

Devon messaged to say he was downstairs and had packed a bag for me as requested. There was less than an hour before the plane departed.

I closed down the laptop, shoved it into and bag that I zipped closed, and switched off the lights as I left the office, pulling the locked door shut as I left.

In the lobby, security raised a hand and hustled to the front doors to let me out. Devon had the car idling at the bottom of the steps, and when I reached the vehicle, I slid into the back seat. Devon shifted into gear and drove along the quiet streets.

“Is there anything I can do while you’re gone, Hudson?”

“Nothing out of the usual, but can you make yourself available for Owen?”

“Of course.”

“Take the opportunity to spend time with that gorgeous wife of yours. I’ll be out of contact so if you need me and can’t get through on the satellite number that Owen has, contact the Taylors Creek Post Office. Elizabeth said they take messages for those at the station.”

“I’m sure Owen will be able to take care of everything that arises.”

“I have no doubt. When we get back, we’ll make arrangements to take the boat out. Do you think Mercy will be well enough to join us?”

“Mercy has been well for the past week, so we have our fingers crossed that the morning sickness is done. I’m sure she would love to go out on the boat, and it’s been so long since we were all together.”

“I’ll look forward to her meeting Elizabeth.”

“You sound confident about her coming back.”

“I am, she will come back.”

Devon pulled the car up to the offices of the private aircraft company, pushed it into park, pulled on the handbrake, and we both climbed from the car. He grabbed my bag from the boot and met me at the door leading into the airline’s building. I took the bag from him, and we shook hands.

“Safe trip and bring her back, Hudson, she loves you.”

I shook my head. “You’re the third person to tell me that in the last few hours. How did you all recognise the fact while I was completely oblivious?”

“When we’re close to something we become blind to what’s going on around us, so don’t feel too bad. Mercy and I had been together for about six weeks when people started commenting on the love for me that was in her eyes. The kicker? When I thought about it, I realized I was in love with her too.”

“So, you knew after only a few weeks? I thought it was too soon for us to have those kinds of feelings, but last night I admitted to myself that I was in love with Elizabeth.” I clapped Devon on the shoulder. “I’ll call you when we’re on the way back and can get reception.”

“Say hi to your outback gal for me and tell her I look forward to her coming home.”

Devon made his way back to the car and I pushed through the door and strode up to the counter where a middle-aged man was waiting.

“Hudson Jackson?”

“Yes.”

“Travis Pierce” I shook his offered hand. “The plane is ready, and we have arranged clearance to land at Harmony Homestead.”

“Thank you.”

“Come with me and we’ll get you on your way.”
