“Consider it done.”

“Thank you.”

Ten minutes later he pulled into the driveway of the house where Elizabeth lived, and I jumped from the car before it had barely come to a stop.

The house was ablaze with lights visible in the front windows and on the front porch. As I made my way to the door, the music blaring through an open window had me wondering if the neighbours had complained.

I reached the top of the steps and the front porch literally bounced in time to the beat of the bass tone of the music. I banged hard enough on the door that the glass panel along the side rattled. After a bit more fist pounding, the music silenced, and Harper opened the door.

Harper narrowed her eyes and Ellie scowled when she stepped to her side.

“What did you do to Liz?” Harper slammed her fisted hands on her hips.

“Can I speak with her?”

The girls shook their heads in unison.

“Come on, girls, please. I need to explain.”

“She’s not here,” Harper snapped.

“I know she has to be here, and I know she’s hurt. Please…”

Harper reached back to a small table in the entry hall and snatched up her phone. She pressed a few buttons and held it out so I could see what was on the screen.

I read the message Elizabeth had sent before lifting my eyes to the girls.

“She’s left?”

Ellie shrugged. “All her stuff is still here but we don’t know if she’ll be back. You know as much as us at this point.”

I dragged a hand over my head. “Fuck.” Things were bad. Very bad. “Okay. Thanks.”

I turned towards the car.

“Hudson?”

I turned back when Harper spoke my name.

“Make it right, she loves you.” Harper’s words echoed Raya’s.

“What are you going to do now?” Ellie asked.

“I’m going to get her.”

The girls smiled.

“Good for you, bring our friend back. And Hudson?”

“Yes, Ellie?”

“Hurt her again and we’ll separate your balls from the rest of your body.”

Ellie left me with no doubt that she was serious.

“I have no intention of hurting her, and I give you my word, I didn’t do anything wrong. This was a misunderstanding.”

The girls nodded and I left them standing on the porch. I asked Devon to take me back to the office and the girls waved as we drove away.
