“I’m so sorry, Elizabeth.”

“Why?” Fingers of fear danced over my body.

Hudson took my face in his hands and locked his eyes on mine. “Condom, Sweetheart.”

The penny dropped and I felt the blood drain from my face. “Fuck.”

“Exactly.”

I took a moment to gather my thoughts and grabbed onto the first thing I thought of in my slight panic. “We’re in water so it’s probably washing out your swimmers. I’m pretty sure it isn’t my time of the month, so I’m confident we’re okay. And,ifI were to get pregnant, I wouldn’t expect anything from you.”

Hudson set his hands on my arms. “Listen to me very carefully.Ifyou do get pregnant, I promise you, I won’t allow you to walk out of my life. Do I want a child with you? Fuck, yeah, I do, but I would like us to get to know each other a little better first. We shared a promise, remember? This is forever.”

I nodded. What did I do to deserve you?”

“I could ask you the same question,” Hudson admitted.

“Come over to the waterfall.”

We swam to the rock ledge behind the waterfall where we sat hugging and kissing beneath the fine spray of water until Hudson’s stomach growled loudly.

We swam back, and dried off but didn’t bother dressing, instead sitting naked as we ate.

The day had been perfect, and I had to admit, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if I did become pregnant.

Chapter Fourteen

HUDSON

I shook the twin’s hands before they engulfed Elizabeth in a three-way hug. The men had flown us to Darwin, albeit somewhat reluctantly since they hadn’t wanted to let their sister leave, and our flight to Sydney was now boarding.

The week at the station had been one of the best in my life. The fresh air, despite the odour of cattle that hung thick in the air near the paddocks, was a welcome change from the smog of Sydney.

Elizabeth’s father and brothers had not been happy when they learned she would be returning to Sydney. It had been an emotional time.

“Take care, Sis,” Mathew said, and Lucas echoed his words before she stepped back to my side, and I gathered her hand.

“Hurt her and we know where to find you.”

“Mathew, stop threatening Hudson.”

“Sorry,” he mumbled but I knew without a doubt, he didn’t mean what he said.

The final call for boarding was announced and we made our way to the crew member who was checking boarding passes. Elizabeth gave her brothers one last wave, and we headed along the walkway to the aircraft. I had four and a half hours until we landed in Sydney to convince Elizabeth to move into my home. My head warned me that living together so soon was a huge mistake, but my heart insisted the timing was right.

***

“Welcome back, Hudson, Elizabeth. Did you have a good trip? It’s good to see you back together.” Devon opened the boot, and I threw my bag in before closing the lid. Elizabeth slid into the back seat, and I climbed in beside her.

“Am I taking you home, Elizabeth, or to Hudson’s place?”

“Home please, Devon. I need to pick up a few things, and it’s good to see you.”

“Elizabeth has agreed to move in with me, Devon. I’ll need you to drive us over there tomorrow, so we can pick up her belongings.”

“Of course. Will eleven be okay?”

I glanced at Elizabeth who nodded. “Eleven will be fine. Bring Mercy and we’ll have a barbeque lunch and make arrangements to take the boat out.”
