“What the fuck, Rori?” She grabs my wrist and drags me to the living room and tugs me down onto the couch next to her. “Why are you and Kaiden Hart acting like old friends?”

“We are old friends—kind of. He dated Valentina when they were in college.”

“Oh gross. How could someone as nice as him deal with Valentina?”

“Right?”

“She is beautiful, though,” she begrudgingly admits.

I nod. “Yeah, she is.”

“Only on the outside, though.” She laughs.

“Sad but true,” I say. I don’t like to speak ill of my sister, but Serena is my best friend and has been since high school. She’s witnessed enough of Valentina’s bad behavior to be informed on her own.

“Did he ask you about your sister?”

“No. We didn’t have time to talk about much. He gave me a ride back here and helped me shower.”

Serena gasps. “He what?”

“Calm down. I kept on my sports bra and shorts. He just helped me clean the dirt out of this.” I point to my shoulder.

She wrinkles her nose. “That looks nasty.”

“Yeah, it does. It hurts like a mofo too.”

“You should cover it, so I don’t have to look at it any longer.”

“Yeah, I’ll get right on that,” I say.

“That’s a good girl,” she repeats Kaiden’s words.

A choking sound escapes me. “You heard him?”

She laughs. “I did. Honestly, it was kind of hot.”

“Trust me, he doesn’t think of me as anything but Valentina’s little sister.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure of that. You’re a beautiful woman now, and I bet it shocked him when he realized who you were.”

“Well, Claudia had put my hair in buns on top of my head, so when I saw him, I probably didn’t look much different than he remembered.”

She laughs. “Only you would bump into one of the most eligible bachelors in South Carolina after your niece did your hair.”

I shrug. “It’s a gift.”

“At least the car didn’t run you over. I guess we should be thankful for that.”

“I am. I thought I was a goner for a second there.”

“I bet. So, who recognized who first?”

“I did. He absolutely had no idea who I was.”

Serena smiles. “I wish I could’ve been there to see. But just the part where you told him who you were. Not almost getting run over.”

“Well, you don’t run, so that would never happen.”
