We’re?

I don’t give it much thought as I head that way. I’m so thirsty, all I can think about is how refreshing a bottle of water is going to taste. But as I enter the kitchen, a familiar scent wafts my way. My eyes dart to the table, then bulge when I see Malcolm seated across from Serena.

“What are you doing here?”

Mal smiles. “It’s nice to see you too, Rori.”

My dark brows lower. “Don’t put words in my mouth. It’s not nice to see you at all.”

“Still hung up on me, huh?” He winks.

“Malcolm, knock it off.” Serena rushes to my defense.

I raise my hand toward her. “It’s okay. I don’t need you to help me deal with him.”

“From what I recall, you used toenjoydealing with me,” he says.

“Yeah.Used to.”

“What have you been up to?” he asks.

I feel his gaze on me as I walk to the fridge to grab a bottle of water. Closing the door with my hip, I take my time opening the cap and, in one seemingly endless gulp, drink down the entire contents. I release a long sigh of satisfaction.

“God, I needed that,” I say out loud without meaning to. My eyes jump over to the table, finding Mal’s almost black orbs focused on me before I look at Serena. “I’m going to shower and get some reading done. I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”

Serena’s smile is filled with apology, even though she’s done nothing wrong. “You make the coffee.”

I laugh. “As if I wouldn’t.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow too,” Mal says.

“Only if you’re lucky,” I fire back, walking from the kitchen.

He chuckles. “I’m always lucky, Rori.”

“Malcolm, you’ll never be that lucky again,” Serena says, delivering the best follow up possible.

It’s all I can do to hold back my laughter until I make it to my room.

Plucking my phone off the nightstand, I fall to the mattress and lie on my stomach. There’s a text from Kaiden, so I pull up our texting chain. We’ve been messaging each other at night before we go to sleep. And this morning he sent one telling me to have a nice day. I can tell you, receiving his message was a wonderful start to my day.

What are you up to tonight?

I went for a longer than usual run.

I’m not going to share the reason why. Should I tell him Mal showed up? We’re not officially a couple, but if the situation were reversed, I’d want to know. And if he didn’t tell me and I found out at a later date, I’d wonder if it was because of lingering feelings.

Mal was here when I got back from running.

Where is he now?

In the kitchen with Serena.

Come over here.

No, it’s okay. I’m in my room.

I’ll come over there.
