“I have good judgment and it’s amazing what getting mugged will teach you,” she jokes.

“Don’t make light of what you went through. I think that night took ten years off my life.”

“I’m making the point that I know shit can break off in an instant and when you least expect it. I’m much more aware of my surroundings now. It’s true that something good can be the result of something bad.”

“Just like us,” I say.

Her head angles to the side. “What do you mean?”

“You almost got run over right before we met again. Therefore, our relationship is an example of something good coming from something bad.”

“Huh. I never thought about us that way.”

“Why don’t you get back in there and finish up so I can take you out to dinner?”

“I am pretty hungry. As much as I loved being at the spa and getting pampered, they served us cheese and fruit.”

“The sooner you’re done, the sooner you can eat.”

She tugs the high heels from her feet and races back to the dressing room.

“We’re eating at Donnelly’s?” she squeals with excitement.

“Yep. We both love their food, so it’s a solid choice.” Since she enjoyed it so much on our first date, I’ve brought her back here a couple more times.

“Let’s go eat!” she says, grabbing the door handle.

“Wait.”

Her head swings toward me. “What’s up?”

“Before we go inside, I need to talk to you about something.” Shit. I shouldn’t have waited until now to discuss this with her. “We’re having dinner with your parents.”

“Wwwhyyy?” She stretches the word out.

“A few days ago your mom reached out to me.”

“How does she know your phone number?”

“She doesn’t, or I should say she didn’t. She messaged the team’s official Facebook page saying it was urgent she get in contact with me. And then Roger, one of the staff, let me know and I gave her a call.”

“I’m impressed she put in some work to get in touch with you,” I say.

“Right? Anyway, she told me how sorry she was about what happened in the hospital and that she’d been doing a lot of thinking. I figured it would be healthy for both of us to give her a chance to apologize. If you want to accept it you can, and if you don’t, no one’s going to say anything. The decision is yours. We’re just giving her an opportunity to be heard in a neutral location.”

“What about Valentina?”

“Your mom said it would just be your dad and her. What do you say? Do you want to go in or should we find another place to eat?”

“Fuck that. Now that I’m here, I want Donnelly’s. Not even my mother can make me lose my appetite for their food.”

I bark out a laugh. “That’s my girl.”
