The five of us sit around the fire pit while the guys discuss their chance at winning the cup this year. They came so close last season only to fall short.

“I like our chances. We’ve kept our team together. If everyone can stay healthy, I don’t see why we can’t have a better outcome this time,” Ryder says.

“I agree. But the season is long and a lot can happen in all that time.”

“Rori, are you a fan of hockey?” Murphy asks.

“Not really. When I worked at the bar, I’d catch parts of the games because they were always on, but I don’t really know the rules or the players.”

“You’re obviously going to have to learn to love it now that you’re with Cap,” Murphy tells me.

“Obvs,” I say, and everyone laughs.

“I want to go to a game too. I volunteer to keep Rori company during the games she goes to,” Serena says.

“That works. I can get you some tickets. You need to come to our season opener,” Kaiden tells me.

“Are you going to give me a shirt with your name and number on it, so everyone will know who I’m rooting for?”

“You know it.”

“I need a shirt too,” Serena exclaims.

“You need a shirt with my name and number,” Murphy tells her, and oddly enough he’s not being flirtatious at all. Did these two somehow slip into the friend zone today? I kind of like not having to keep him away from my best friend—for his protection, not hers. She’d eat him up and spit him out in no time.

“What position do you play?” she asks.

“I’m a goalie, and it’s the most neglected position on my team. I could use some fans in the audience,” he says.

“He’s full of shit,” Kaiden whispers. “He has more fans than any of us.”

Serena shrugs. “I’ll wear your shirt if you buy it for me.”

“Deal,” he agrees.

“Who’s going to wear my shirt?” Ryder asks.

“Dude, who doesn’t wear yours? You have a whole harem of women in the audience.”

“What’s this?” Serena’s interest stirs.

“Have you heard of the Goode Girls?” Murphy asks.

“Nope, can’t say I have.”

“Well, Ryder’s last name is Goode and—”

“Excuse me,” I interrupt. “Your last name is Goode? As in Ryder Goode,” I ask, snickering.

Serena guffaws. “Oh my God. Ride her good. #legendary.”

“Your parents couldn’t have chosen a better name for a future manwhore,” Kaiden says.

“It’s a name and a self-fulfilling prophecy all in one,” I say.

Ryder raises his palms. “You won’t hear me complaining.”

“Back to the Goode Girls thing you mentioned,” Serena prods Murphy.
