“Wh-what?” he managed at last.Andthen he added, “Goddess?”Becauseitmustbe she—he could think of no one else who could possibly look like this.

“Goback,”she repeated.“Thereis one who would speak to you and you must listen carefully to all she has to say.”

Cadefrowned.

“Ifyou mean,Andrea,Idon’t deserve to speak to her.Idon’t deserve to ever even see her again!That’swhyI’mleaving,Goddess.”

“AndItell you that you must not leave,”she said firmly.“Ifyou do not return to theMotherShip, it will not be only your own life you are ruining.Goback and listen with an open heart.NOW.”

Thelast word was clearly not a request.Cadefelt a shock go through him, as though a vast wave had washed over him and knocked him down in the ocean.Fora moment he couldn’t breathe…and then the viewscreen flickered and showed the red gash in space again.

Fora moment,Cadejust sat there, stunned.Slowly, he began to feel he could breathe again.TheGoddessherself had visited him—she had even shown him her face, though he could not describe it except to speak of its unending beauty and grace.

Cadeflipped back on the communications channel.

“Closethe fold,” he said in a voice that shook a little. “Ihave unfinished business aboard theMotherShip.I’mcoming back.”

“What?Hewhat?”TheTwinKindredwho had givenAndithe bad news frowned as he spoke into his communicator. “Areyou sure?Ohwait—yes, here he comes.”

Helooked up at the black patch of space which was visible above their heads.TheDockingBaywas protected by an atmosphere bubble which allowed ships to pass in and out of theMotherShipwhile keeping the breathable air and atmosphere safely inside the huge structure.

Suddenly, a sleek silver ship descended into theBayand came to a landing not far from whereAndiwas standing.Theside door opened and a familiar figure stepped out.

Anditried not to gasp, but it was hard to believe she was seeing correctly,Hereyes were fogged with tears, after all, which made everything look blurry.

“Cade?” she whispered, as the tall figure strode towards her. “Is…is it really you?Youcame back?”

“Icame back,” he rumbled. “Tospeak to youAndrea—to hear what it is you have to say.”

Anditried to talk, but a sob came out instead.Shereached forCadeand he was there, his broad chest under her fingertips.

“Andrea…sweetheart…”Hisvoice was hoarse with emotion as he pulled her close.

“I’mglad you came back,Brother,” theTwinKindredwho had been standing awkwardly besideAndias she cried remarked. “She’slonging for you—when she thought she’d lost you, she started to weep.Ittore at my heart.”

“Shedidn’t lose me—Ilosther,”Cadetold him. “ButI’mback for her now—if she’ll have me.”

Andishook her head and tried to get control of herself.

“Cade, please.Iwant…Ineed…” she began, but the tears were still coming and she couldn’t talk.

“It’sall right, sweetheart,” he murmured and swept her up into his arms, bridal style. “Comeon, let’s go talk.”

Andhe carried her away.

Cadecarried her to her own suite, which was closest to theDockingBay.Andiwas glad for the familiar surroundings.Bythe time he sat her down on the couch in front of the decorative firewall which showed blue and green flames dancing behind the glass, she had gotten control of herself and stopped sobbing.
